Should have been a flag!🤬
I've worked at the same engineering firm for 4 years. I'm currently making $161k with only a $750 bonus, but excellent vacation (4 weeks, cash out anytime, rolls over indefinitely), 45 hours a week. I have an interview with a recruiter at Guidehouse this week for a Technical Project Manager role. It seems to be focused in the government space and requires a security clearance. What sort of salary and benefits could I expect for this sort of role at Guidehouse?

Family life vs mind numbing boring work.

It's not about making it work, but more about having the flexibility to go out to dinner with your wife on a Monday night, take your kid to soccer practice Tuesday nights, visit elderly parents on a Wednesday night. Honestly, I've stopped drinking the kool aid. No amount of high powered clients, prestige, graduate degrees, or even money can buy those little moments back
Disagree 100%. It's definitely harder, but it is whatever you make of it. Lots of "dead beat" parents out there that do nothing, as well as plenty that do a decent job of "providing" but they don't spend any time with their children at all. They just go to work, get home and throw some food on the stove for the kids to eat and then spend the evening watching tv without any meaningful interactions. I'd argue that instances like that are more harmful than somebody being on the road 3 nights a week making an effort to help kids with homework and FaceTime every night.
There's no "best" or "worst". Plenty of folks in make it work no matter what. At the same time, plenty of ppl with industry jobs still can't make it work.
Then you already have your answer OP, you need to make the switch to a job that requires no travel. Nothing wrong with it.
I am a commercial person switching to federal. Idea of commercial/global being sexy and federal being boring exists but not everywhere. I love working with a big team and actually developing people (something that entirely gets ignored on short engagement). OP - you're at a different point in your life and koolaid or no it works in DC and in Federal
@op
Slalom has never done layoffs....heck getting fired is actually pretty hard here. So job security is good...even when our numbers are slow.
The work week is normal here...you start at a normal time and are done around 5-6
The leads do maybe an hour of work a night just helping out other groups
The biggest difference is the lack of bureacracy...i dont have to get my status reports reviewed by 4 different partners whose only value prop is changing the langauage.
Here if someone jumps in...its to actually make a material difference to the analysis.
Imagine a world where people only open their mouth to provide real help and value for the client and not waste your time asking you to change the font from calibri to arial
@Slalom1, that sounds too good to be true! What's the catch?
Slalom1, I'm seriously considering applying to your company. Can you describe what a week is like? Also how is job stability and career growth?
Also in the DC area, how is Slalom? What cities are the best 'local' offices?
@D1, I'm sure plenty of people make it work but there's absolutely no way people who are gone for 4 days a week can have the same impact as someone who is present Monday-Thursday.
@D1, I'm not saying consulting parents cannot be good parents.
If your mindset is already in a good place (ie to stay involved and be there for your children, then wouldn't being present an extra 3-4 days a week really help?
I'm sure it would. But would it help you as a person? There's a trade off that you need to consider: will you be happy working an industry job doing the same time of work with the same team of people for an extended period of time? If you don't consider the work you do now to be fulfilling (which I doubt you do since you mentioned "stopped drinking the kool aid"), then making the switch to a local gig with the normal commuting routine might be the better route.
Hard to get in...have to have experience.
Long hiring process
Language value prop is still value. One sentence or statement phrased incorrectly could derail entire conversation or miss objective completely.
@d2
You are right...language can derail an opportunity. But how often do partners provide true value vs rewording something just because they are more familiar w a different style of writing.
All im sayimg is that the partners here are leaa likely to have you re write something because its not in their favorite template or is in active vs passive english (or vice versa)
Here, partners accept that people do things differently. So here you might get one change...and its usually to help you clarify a point.
I should point out that are entry level partners usually have 15-20 years experience in big 4 consulting. So they are still good...they just realize that what appears to be a small insignificant change to them is a 16 hour rework for an already tired team. They way the pros and cons of those changes
