Is Georgetown worth applying to for an MBA or MSF ? Thinking of grad programs in the DMV ...Hopkins is a little too far away for me.

MSF= masters of science in finance? From what I have heard, I would strongly recommend staying away from Hopkins MBA. If you are considering a Georgetown MBA, see if you can get Deloitte to pay for it or go part time. For me, the biggest downside of a Georgetown MBA is the quality of the network. I think that they are tight-knit, but I just think that my people are at a different program and I want it to be a good culture fit. If you want the MBA for the MBA, then it could be good. I would also recommend looking into American, GW, and Univ. of MD. Good luck!

Hmm ok. So, I am a Georgetown SFS grad and I also considered applying to the joint MBA program. It is just not a top MBA program so if you are concerned about brand, ace the GMAT and apply to a top b-school. I don't think that a Georgetown MBA will give you that big of a boost on the brand front. Georgetown, yes, but MBA, no. I'd recommend going to some of their recruiting events and talking to the students. If they seem like people you'd want to be friends a with, then cool. My SFS program was not a culture fit for me (although it was a top program), and I feel like I have a ton of loans to show for it, but did not really get that fun grad school experience, mostly because I really didn't like my classmates (not on my same wavelength). Georgetown is in the top 10 schools in the country for highest student loan burdens. You pay a lot more for Georgetown than any of the other schools in the area. There is prestige, but in my opinion, the amenities sucked and if I am paying that much, I'd at least like classrooms with windows and a decent gym. The business school building is the nicest on campus and they are building a new gym. It is a ton of money for not the best education. There are certainly strong areas and things that are high quality, but it is so much money in loans! If you can get Deloitte to pay for it, that's great or if you get a full ride, even better. If Deloitte offered to pay for my MBA there, I would go, but only part-time or executive. Unless you really hate consulting and Deloitte and you want to do a big transition, I would not leave Deloitte for a two year, full time Georgetown MBA program.

MSF from H/s/w would be a good investment . An MSF from McDonough, prob not worth the $$$. If you're going to do McDonough, do the MBA. MS In data analytics/business analytics is a nice degree for a specialization PRIOR to B school. I wouldn't sub one for the other. If you're going part-time, McDonough MBA should get you what you're seeking.

GW MBA grad here - what's the end game? Change careers, check a box, etc? I found the GW program to be alright, but the network and career opportunities upon exit were pretty weak.

like

B1- thanks for the info and congrats on your scholarship! I looked into the Darden Rosslyn option and it is for executive MBAs only. What are people's thoughts on eMBA programs? Do you think people look down on them? Are they mostly so that people in consulting can get the bump to the next level?

like

@pwc1 that's a tough question. Most people get an MBA to become a consultant, but everyone here is already a consultant. For me, it's a hedge against poor advancement at my firm. If things go really well for me at Bah in the next couple years, I may ditch the MBA efforts. If they don't, I'll at least have more to show for my time than mastery of excel and PowerPoint.

like

OP- I had several responses. I'll just assume you Amen'd all of them! Haha happy to help!

like

BAH 1 - yea I think my point was to look elsewhere after wrapping up the program. You won't see much benefit in staying at BAH after you complete the program.

like

@B2 Part time is the only way for me to financially justify getting an MBA period. Being out of the labor force for 2 years, plus the degree's sticker price doesn't make sense to me. Thinking it would take my entire career to turn a dime on all that work!

like

@OP - agreed. Full time isn't worth it unless you go M7. Don't be afraid to go part-time, TS hard but worth it. Yo got it! @P1 - I've heard the same from my friends that went to GW. A lot of them hated the experience bc of shitty network. The school up-sells that program to the max.

like

@d1 several things... I wasn't impressed with the McDonough student/alumni panel at the info session I went to. They had awesome before stories but bland after stories: 'I started a healthcare tech business at a coffee shop and decided I was truly passionate about becoming government IT contractor.' But it was a weeknight in DC so that may have been a poor sample. I don't know much about the Darden Roslyn campus, except that it would make it way easier for me to attend. GWU is economical in part bc I got a partial scholarship. Between a scholarship and BAH tuition assistance, I shouldn't need to pay any tuition until classes #5 and #6 next summer.

like

BAH2 - I feel like the program is in transition, but that pretty much sums it up. If someone wants to check the box, it's fine. From a expanding network and opening doors standpoint - keep it moving.

like

B1- agreed. Do you think that a firm would ever raise someone's salary that much? I find it highly unlikely that Deloitte Federal would.

like

OP- George Mason might have a MBA with VA in-state tuition. If you want a better school brand within Deloitte, I think that it is irrelevant. All people care about is how good of a worker you are. If you want it to build a career within Deloitte, I'd either have D pay for it or go with the least expensive, but decent, option.

like

B1- ditto at Deloitte. I only know of 1, but he is well respected and a really great person. He isn't at PPD at this point, but that is more because he went the technical expert route. The PPDs really respect him and his work. Every time I have respected tuition at GMU, I am always impressed. You could move to VA to get the in-state tuition assistance!

like

B1- you're welcome! Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it is a better value the GW. GW strikes me as a cash cow whereas GMU strikes me as a state school that is committed to providing a good value for its students. GW is def more prestigious and better known nationally so I would also take that into account.

@D1 I'm also in my mid-late 20's, so I'm thinking lifetime earnings & feasibility to acquire said degree with a family. If I am ever going to get one, I need to be in a program within the next 2 years

OP way to ask the hard questions! Big 4 treats their people better (experience: my wife is an accountant at one), and the partner business model is better. My hesitance to move from BAH to a big 4 is effort/risk vs. reward. I have very little network at big4, but pretty strong network at BAH. I haven't ruled out moving later on or leaving and coming back.

like

Sounds good. Just make sure it is the right degree at the right program. Good luck!

like

Also, a lot of the really loyal bah people are probably more focused on a single, massive, government client for whom their experience is worth very little outside of that client's space. In that case, BAH is their only option until BAH loses the contract and those people have to get jobs with whatever company wins the contract.
