Is getting an Ed.D worth the cost for someone with no aspirations other than staying in the classroom? I’m already at the top of the pay scale, so I wouldn’t get anymore money.

I just got my EdD because in 10 years I can retire and then move to higher education. I want to retire and get my pension before I move to higher education

Maybe. Depends on what you plan to do in retirement. I’m three years from retirement and one measly internship from a principal cert (I’m a supervisor). The cert would definitely help me land gigs post retirement if I wanted to work with it. Without it, I’m limited. Basically, not getting it closes doors. Getting it opens them. If you plan to do education related stuff in retirement, it might be worth the time and effort now. I’m going fishing, so it’s less likely I’ll be in need of such credentials. But I’ve seen schools work with people to give them extra work to add to that base retirement. Gotta skill set for scheduling? A hankering for student support through summer programs? Those things need managers and you could market yourself into a position as a coordinator.

No, why would you spend the time and money to earn a credential from which you won’t benefit?

Our local universities prefer PHDs. Also, in Michigan, one can not receive a highly effective rating unless they have a PHD and present to the teachers at a PD or something. Personally, none of that matters to me at this time, since I’ve put my children’s education first after having received my masters. One college paid for and still one to go.

Nope. I chose to become National Board Certified instead of pursuing another degree.

Yes, I think it’s worth it! Working with younger kids for me at times gets a bit tiresome. When I get older I would at least be able to use the little strength left that I have to teach young adults. Even being an administrator would be nice. This would give you a wider range of job opportunities to work not only at the elementary and secondary schools, but at post secondary schools such as junior colleges and the universities. I think NBTS certification would compliment elementary and secondary as well as all post secondary occupations as well. It’s just spending the money for the degree and finding the teaching gig you are wanting or looking for!

I have my admin certification, a MA, and I am already teaching college classes through a university. Many universities hire non doctoral teachers now to teach specialized courses.

Not if you have family you want to enjoy.

If it's a goal regardless of the rest, then it is worth it. But if you are only in it to advance your career and bank account then you've already answered your question. Much luck to you!

I want mine sooooooooo much. I was 2/3 the way through and had an accident

I feel we need to keep the hybrid schedule for the rest of the year

If you are looking for institutions to value it then unlikely. However, if it furthers your passion, fuels your writing and facilitates the elevation of your personal brand then YES!

also had the same consideration recently and the answer is no the return on investment just is not there.

Absolutely not! You will never pay back the loans.

Definitely not.

Ok…I’m curious. I pretty much have to beg, barter and steal to get supplies for my classroom. Do teachers in states with legal cannabis have this problem? It’s my understanding that sales tax from its purchase goes to schools, or is that all smoke and mirrors…No pun intended. 😉

This would be targeted to grades 1-6 primarily, but it needs a high ceiling.
