Is giving two weeks notice standard for the federal government? I'd rather not hang around awkwardly with my coworkers when I can instead free up a billet for them. Thoughts?

Especially in government, there’s a lot of institutional knowledge kept within each person. Simply leaving means that knowledge is lost and you’ll possibly screw your coworkers and team if you leave abruptly. Transition planning is important, too.

From a contractor perspective. 2 weeks is enough, but if you think it might be hard for them to find a replacement, you might want to give more.
If you are a federal employee, more time may be good if you can just because of how long it takes for the federal government to fill positions.
Transition planning is definitely helpful. Providing SOPs for what you do can be helpful too if there isnt one buit yet. The federal government and contracting world are very small and the key is to leave on good terms. Don't burn any bridges.

If you are transferring to another gov agency and you don’t want to be around your coworkers no more you can take LWOP or FMLA for your last 2 weeks (plan accordingly though). These 2 are commonly used when you are in a hostile work environment. If you are leaving the federal service, I would ask what your agencies policy is on paying out your LA and any other leave you have, some do require a 2 week notice in order to pay for your leave. If you got no leave and you just want out, just quit.

helpful

Going to take longer than two weeks to announce your position and hire replacement. Usually can't post opening until employee departs.

like

The position cant be filled until your employment has terminated. Two weeks is nothing for the federal government. Last hire I was involved with it took us almost 8 months to get an approved PD to put into the hiring system so you wont be holding any one up.

I was recently offered a Zoom interview. The school had 10 interview slots for me to choose from. Three were one day this week and the rest are next week. I chose the first time slot available. Should I have waited until one of the last slots so I was fresher on their mind when choosing a candidate? I am just sitting here stressing out until I here something. Also, do interviewers still appreciate a hand written thank you for the interview?

Also, I started doing the daily readings on the Conference of Bishops website. Anyone interested in joining me to set up a group bible study of sorts via zoom or something? When do you stop interviewing after getting a verbal offer that you verbally accepted (it may not be the dream job but checks right boxes—comp, benefits, good company), but you haven’t received the formal offer letter? Two other companies want to move me forward in the interview process. I already told one that I’ve received an offer and they are trying to move up an interview with the hiring manager. The other knew I was expecting an offer and just asked if I can do a 2nd interview this week.

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?

My partner got a City of Toronto offer. Salary band is 104-121k. HR asked for his expectations and he said 115k. HR came back with a 106k offer stating nobody on the team makes that much so they cant offer it. Also said she is unsure if there is any wiggle room if any at all. I’ve looked at everyone on the team with the same titles salary on the sunshine list and the lowest I see is 121k. I assume there is an OT component of some sort but also can’t confirm. Thoughts? /negotiating advice?
