Is it a better exit strategy to get deep technical experience or strategy experience? I was told during recruiting that 1 year here = 2 year in industry, but I’m not seeing how that trickles into tech

What type of exit strategy are you looking for? What type of work are you good at, and what type of work do you enjoy doing? I don’t know if I’d nod my head at 1 year = 2, but to the extent that is true, it would be from things like: - you often do transformational projects, moving immediately on to the next one when that is finished - you take on as much responsibility as you can handle, and get “field promotions” during longer projects (e.g., become a team lead) - promotions every 2-3 yrs., not dependent on someone leaving to open a spot for you - you quickly move into leadership roles and responsibilities that include senior level skills in industry (e.g., presenting to senior execs, justifying large investments, developing company strategy recs.) As far as tech goes, the best advantage is the first one above. Many industry positions have a lot of ongoing maintenance / enhancement work. You might do a transformational project, but then you continue wiring with that architecture for many years, and may not be able to simply drop that and do the next big project using the latest greatest tools and packages. However, the typical tech consulting career path leads very quickly to project management and other leadership positions. Being a hands on programmer or even systems / cloud / infrastructure architect is not as commonly available over the long term as team lead, project manager, and program manager roles. You also typically spend increasing amounts of your time on things like sales/proposals/marketing. These are valuable and applicable skills for tech executive roles in industry, but if your goal is to be a senior developer at Google, or a lead developer at a shiny new unicorn startup, many consulting roles will not give you an accelerated path vs. industry to gaining deep hands on tech skillsets—maybe in the short term, but probably not over the long term. There are exceptions to all of this, but your question is really asking about generalizations.

Strategy experience. Deep technical experience comes from industry

Why not both? Then you can actually do something instead of making a nice slide with bs “strategy wow" graphs :)

Both. That 1 year here equals 2 elsewhere is horse shit

Probably depends on where you want to exit to

So this might be a better place to post this and ask this question: Uncle D has announced explicitly that most people won’t get a pay raise & bonus this year except for those promoted and high performers. Amid this crisis, are companies including other big 3, MBB, FAANG, boutique consulting firms still giving high raises and issue stocks? Can you share the impact from your firm?
