Is it a common feeling or that diversity hires at big 4 are less qualified than individuals hired through general channels? Can anyone in HR support or refute?

We have something similar - "diversity" interns as you call it come in earlier (year or more) than normal and assigned to admin, their cost doesn't hit business units. They get to know culture, get to help with various types of projects not just in tax, audit, etc. when they have extra time. Then they come back later (if they want) for a normal internship. The point of diversity recruiting is to make extra effort to find and reach out to diverse candidates to encourage them to consider the firm. Once they enter interview phase they don't get any special treatment, and hired based on merit. If you had an experience with one dud from that program does NOT mean all diverse candidates = lower quality.

SA3 you should talk to HR if that's what you feel your firm is doing - what your partner said is probably not reflective of realty. It's actually illegal to hire to fill a quota of diverse employees - employers can't hire a minority just because of their race, gender, religion if there is a more qualified candidate who happens to not check all of the diverse checkboxes. At my firm we have a training video everyone has to watch explaining exactly what the extra recruiting efforts are towards diverse candidates. Maybe your firm just needs more communication to everyone. Your partner is outrageous - how can hiring people who have advanced degrees be recruiting in the ghetto?? I have seen leeway given to people though if a certain demographic is low in a department (not always specific to race, religion). This staff was HORRIBLE but the other (female) partner said we couldn't get rid of him bc we didn't have enough guys on the team.

Lol you about to get slandered

No one hired at least in my office is less qualified than anyone else working here. This is a stupid statement to make.

like

Define "traditional." Sounds like you mean to say "white"

I am a black male. OP by every standard I make more than the cut. Prestigious High Sch, Reputable College and Graduate Sch MSA, High GPA, Study Abroad, Speak 3 languages, Extra Curricular, Social Skills, Internship and Offer Big 4, Getting a CPA. When it comes to this issue honestly keep your ill-informed opinion to yourself. You are disregarding my hard work and success by suggesting that I got my job to fill some diversity quota. Not cool!

like

There are specific internships targeted at underrepresented minorities, but to me, I don't see why it matters. As soon as you show up full time on day 1 you are held to the same standards as everyone else.

like

It's easier to get the most potential out of people when they actually feel included, cared about, and invested in. Merely hiring them is only part of it.

I think HR has arrived @KPMG2

This is stupid

I don't think it's a stupid statement. The diversity interns hired by PwC do office support tasks instead of actual, chargeable work like the more traditional interns. That looks a lot like doing diversity so we can say we are diverse instead of actually bringing everyone into the fold on equal footing.

like

Just wanted to say that there are minorities that do go to "top" accounting "schools" and are "hired" because they are 100% qualified. I should know because I'm one of them. On the flip side, it's a catch 22 because some of your white colleagues will assume you only got their because of your skin color. Please don't assume that the only reason they're there is because they "helped" the firm with diversity.

like

Here's something to think about: if a "diverse" candidate does not perform, is it due to them being incompetent or is it due to not forming the right relationships with the people that matter that can look out for them and coach them?

like

I am a proud black man and would not change it for anything. Sorry to bust your bubble, I am an interviewer and make hiring decisions, in my region we do not and I repeat do not take minorities if they do not meet minimum requirements. I know The Donald is working wonders in your head but sorry, we good and making the same $ as you superior beings. Performance has nothing to do with color but one's attitude and those around him/ her to support.

In face minorities need to work harder to get the same perception. I know most of the people who got fired are actually people from your so called "general channels"

like

OP - I have definitely noticed a difference. We only hire from top accounting programs, but accept diversity hires from low ranked schools. They are the only people we hire from these universities and they struggle to perform. It's not fair to them or us in my opinion as I think we should be taking top candidates regardless of race or gender.

like

D1, it seems like maybe the inconsistency in talent could be driven by school, not other factors.

like

Couldn't tell you who the diversity hires are here, so...nope

Any champion of equality should welcome open discussion of these perceptions. Better to have an open and peaceful discussion amongst diverging views than to condone unfairness or let perceptions fester. Thanks for the post OP.

like

@EY3, do you feel that diversity programs have a net negative impact in the workplace? To answer OP's question, it probably is a common perception (broadly in the professional world) even when the actual fact pattern doesn't back it up. What I mean to say is, it has to be tough...like, sometimes I feel like minorities have to perform at an even higher level to shake off the people that feel like "they just got x because they are black". How do you deal with that?

like

I can guess SA3's race and if not race then his upbringing. That type of mentality is sadly very prevalent in many americans' today. Must be nice to come from privilege to be able to sit on an ivory tower like that.
