Is it a red flag as a candidate to ask if a company offers maternity leave? I was recently laid off, so I wasn't expecting to lose my job. We're planning on trying for a baby in the next year or so, so it's really important to me that my next job offers paid maternity leave.

The issue is that it's so rarely advertised on company web sites, but ultimately better maternity leave would sway my decision for a job. Is there a way to ask this tactfully? Or without raising red flags?

If they don’t support you asking then you don’t want to work for them anyway.

Done having kids but would still ask this to gauge their reaction as well as support.

Former Tech Recruiter of 10 years here. Totally a valid question, and not a red flag. Just make sure to ask it to your recruiter directly when discussing the benefits. Say you want to set up a conversation to discuss the benefits in detail, and then ask all of your benefits questions (401K matching, maternity leave, etc.). I would suggest not bring it up to the manager directly unless it comes up.

It shouldn't, however, if you're afraid this might create a bias (even if they employer says it doesn't) you could ask the them if they provide family leave, and how long. Maternity leave is considered family leave, but for all they know you could have a parent or partner who may need your care.

I don’t think so. Honestly even if I’m not wanting children now, it’s nice to know I have the option and that option exists for coworkers. Makes me think the company cares. However in your situation I think it gets tricky because some places may require x amount of time before you are eligible to receive maternity leave, like at least working a year which may or may not work for your plan. Honestly if it were me I would delay having kids if you need the income.

Most companies these days offer maternity leave. If you are concerned about the company you are looking at, you could ask what benefits are offered at the company.

I do ask that question and nobody ever mentions maternity leave! The company that laid me off offered excellent maternity leave but they never mentioned it in any of their benefits packages.

Usually a company sends out the benefits package if you make it to the last interview. There you would be able to see if maternity leave is included. Or you could ask a general “what kind of benefits do you guys offer”, but sometimes they offer a lot of things that may not be said. You could also get to offer letter stage and review it then or be able to ask explicitly. Have you also checked out Glassdoor? They usually have reviews on a lot of companies but I guess if it was a small company there wouldn’t be a lot of reviews.

It shouldn’t be in a perfect world but we’re far from that. I’d rec making it known that benefits are important to you and asking about their benefits, possibly see if they have a document outlining them that they can provide. Good luck!

There is nothing wrong with asking about benefits packages during an interview. I might not specifically ask about maternity leave but asking in general about their benefits package and will detail their maternity leave and get you the answer you want.

You could ask about their benefits during the interview process. Once you get in there you can ask details about maternity leave and explain that you want to have children eventually

Usually, those details will appear on the company benefit documents. No need to ask, just wait for it and read your benefits.

I’ve had a cis childfree friend who made a habit of asking about both parental leave and trans-specific benefits, because it helped her learn whether the company was anticipating the needs of employees who weren’t just like the single 20-something cis dudes. You can ask as specifically or generally as you want.

I don't think asking would raise red flags at all. But I do advice you to hold it off only until you get the offer. It might also be a good idea to post here and ask about the company's parental leave policy.

Of course not. The option of a maternity leave is merely the bare necessity for women looking to apply into a company. If anything, the red flag here is if they don't offer one. In which case, you wouldn't want to apply to them.

I would ask, but be aware that if they offer it, it often doesn't kick in until you have been there for a year.

I wouldn’t ask during the interview. I would ask the HR rep about the benefits package post interview if an offer is made.

It's not a red flag. Ask about their benefits package, then follow-up with questions about fmla, maternity leave, insurance, retirement plans, etc. HR or recruiter should have this info. If they are unsure, ask to see a sample benefits pamphlet or pdf.

I’m blessed to be with my current company where I am one of the younger managers and they gave me an originally offer of 75k with a 10 % performance bonus. On Thursday I was informed by the lead PO and HR that leadership had decided that the project management office was no longer necessary for the company and all three of us, the director and the two technical PMs, were being let go. None of us were given any notice.

They offered me 2 weeks of severance pay and I negotiated it to 3.

My group hired a client's son a few months ago and he is currently staffed on my project. I am a new Manager, he is an analyst.

He frequently shows up at the end of the day and says that he has not completed the work that was assigned to him because he wasn't in the mood for it today and would deal with it once he's gotten into the "flow". I have escalated this previously and the director was more concerned about making him feel bad rather the fact that I keep having to pick up his slack.
