Is it appropriate for a senior associate to swear and scream at an associate? Senior associate is universally disliked by all associates but continues to promoted and will be named a partner this year. Senior was a factor in 4 associates leaving in the past year.

No? How is this even a question? We are adults in a professional environment. Screaming and swearing is never, ever acceptable.

No, and that's true regardless of the power disparity. I used to work with a partner who yelled at associates and didn't realize that wasn't standard until I left (ironically for biglaw). Real professionals are not going to scream at you.

like

It’s not appropriate or professional to scream at a colleague. That being said, I guarantee office leadership knows about the issues with the Senior Associate and just doesn’t care.

Dude is a jerk. Run away.

Repeated yelling / swearing is ridiculous. One in a blue moon is not ideal but perhaps workable, but if this is regular behavior that is absolutely not OK.

like

Screaming at someone in a business setting is never appropriate. Losing your temper is a sign of weakness - you don’t even have the ability to control your own reactions to what someone else has done — and is hugely disrespectful. It just reflects huge personality failings across the board in my view. I try to “never say never,” but this is a pretty bright line situation to me.

Is it worth mentioning during my exit interview with the firm and/or when I give notice? I plan to lateral fairly soon. I hope to avoid any drama.

like

Yep.

like

Ah, yes. You have a senior with well-connected parents. Those are the worst.

likesmart

Absolutely not. I’ve never yelled at anyone during my time in big law. There is no reason to ever do that. You can give frank feedback when expectations are not met, but never in a condescending or harassing way. Everyone here is a professional and there is no place for demeaning behavior.

I’ve luckily never had to deal with this, but if I was yelled at I would calmly say that I won’t be down to unprofessionally and that I’d be willing to continue the discussion later in a civil manner.

like

Do you guys get to do confidential upwards reviews? If so, definitely ensure everyone affected is mentioning this. At my firm, if a couple of people have given similar upwards feedback, they will raise it with the senior/partner. If they’re on the partnership track and the firm is keen on them, they might try and get them some soft skills training to address issues like this and they’ll have to see improvement to continue on the track.

like

I’d like to think that wouldn’t fly at my firm.

How should I deal with this toxic boss? A senior lead likes to reign with terror. She would call people out in meetings and gives really harsh feedback in front of everyone. When people try to defend themselves she keeps going with her criticisms. It’s always her way, or it’s the wrong way. I’m sick of her behaviour and with burnout, I just can’t be bothered to rationalise with her … but at the same time I don’t want her or other people to think I did something wrong . I am burning out. My manager forgot her password for a program and blamed me. She said: how do you dare to change my password. I just have access to her account not her personal email. To change a password you need an email and a confirmation code because I am an average person, not a hacker. If I was a hacker I would have used that skill to do something better that change her password or look into her things tbh. I cannot stand her, she is constantly attacking me and seriously ruining my life.

Is it crazy to consider a move in-house at the moment, given the market? Heading into my 4th year and now that I’ve received an interview request, I’m semi-panicking, thinking it may be safer to tough it out in big law for a little longer instead. FWIW, the opportunity is in-house at a well-funded startup and a decent sized legal team. If the state of the market wasn’t a consideration, there would be no question for me, but here we are…
