Is it appropriate to end a call with “thanks guys” when there are women on the call?

As always, the answer is … it depends. If you’re an overt or unconscious sexist, then doing that is just another check in the column that reinforces everyone’s view of you as such. But if that were the case, you probably wouldn’t be asking the question.
If you don’t exhibit sexist behavior/attitudes in other ways, then the only people likely to be offended are the SJWs who are constantly looking for reasons to be offended.
With that being said, it probably makes sense to try to use “Thanks everyone” (breaking the habit/cycle). But don’t beat yourself up when you forget.

Unconscious sexism FTW.

I've always been of the opinion that you err on the side of making feel welcome.

The cost to me for finding a gender neutral word is almost negligible. The impact of this choice may be material either way (positive if I do it, negative if I don't).

Same with pronouns. If it makes them feel welcome in the team, I'll do it without hesitance.

That said, if someone assumes that I'm an ass if I didn't do it before it was raised as a concern, then I'm going to assume that you've got bigger problems than the selected pronoun.

Kindness and empathy is free and easy. Let's try to give it a shot.

Yes, I don’t think anyone takes the gender part of that phrase literally

Probably better to end the conversation with "Later nerds" since its Accenture.

M1, say it to clients. They’ll respect your confidence.

I’m a woman and I wouldn’t think twice about someone saying it or doing that myself

like

On a small call I would say thanks guys. On a call with 5+ people I would probably say “thanks everyone” because I don’t know them 😬

There was just a post asking this. But I’ll say the same thing here: it’s not that it’s inappropriate, but there are better phrases that include the women (e.g. folks, everybody, etc.)

The best part of primarily working with Southern clients is that “y’all” is completely acceptable

Not appropriate. All calls must end with "th-th-th-that's all folks!"

I'm from the south, "guys" has always meant more than 1 person or animals really to me and is, to me and most southerners, collective of y'all (2-3 people) and all y'all (>3 people).

Sm2 that’s hilarious 😂 😂 😂

Say it with me: No. One. Actually. Cares. Including. Women.

How about “thanks folks”?

The fact that you are asking this question illustrates where we are as a species

Gender neutral unless it’s “big dawg”. Then it’s Atib specific

like

No. There are many options:

Team
Everyone
Playas
Shittakes
Peasants
Rabble

Yes. I’m actually a little annoyed when people go like thanks guys, oh sorry, gal and guys. No. Feminism is about equality, having a seat at the table with save weight and voice, not “hey guys!!”

How about ending the call with “thanks girls” or “thanks ladies” or “thanks women”. Does that sound appropriate with men on the call?

C10 it's typical for non-women to easily dismiss the fact that one of the countless problems inherent in patriarchal societies is that women have to accept our casual erasure in a language built by and for men. Since it has always served them, they refuse to see how it doesn't serve everyone.

likefunny

Another way to look at it is how the woke culture wants you to say LatinX instead of Latinos. Same thing as saying “guys.” Assumes masculine audience.

What about “just between us girls”?

You have to be a particular type of person to be offended by that, but tbh, I personally try to avoid it whenever I can catch myself, just to be on the safe side. I've gotten used to "thanks folks" or "thanks everyone".

Doesn't take too long to get used to

AP3 down with the guys, gals, and non-binary pals 💪 (but high-key for PWC1 lets never refer to women in the workplace as girls/girlies – they are adults and therefore women; gals = fine, girls/girlies =not)

As a woman, I’m totally comfortable if you say thanks guys. As long as you compensate me the same as a man. Would much rather have that than people be sensitive to “micro aggressions”.

If you’re the kind of person who’s considerate enough to ask this, I would say unlikely to come across as inappropriate. I’m a woman and personally see “guys” as gender neutral but not everyone does.

like

It’s fine. I use it all the time. It’s neutral

God bless u

Our DEI training tells us to avoid that here. I've been catching myself once in a while and adjusting to "everyone".
