The world is crashing and burning and you’re thinking about leaving your job?
Please return your Biglaw card and Australian wool jacket to the concierge on your way out, please.
Now in all seriousness: do it when you have some experience under your belt. Not now.

Due to today’s events, I am formally doubling down on my recommendation to stay put.
Been there, done that, but not then...give it a little time. Leaving after 6 months is a red flag to any future employer. Sure, it may be the firm or its people...but 6 months says it’s you.
I had to lateral at 15 mos because my firm's satellite office was failing. It was very hard even though I had a stellar resume. All the recruiters said...if only you had 2 yrs of exp. So that is why I feel you should wait. Your prospects will be way better.
Is there a specific circumstance you’re dealing with for why you need weekends/nights free? If not, I’d stick it out until you get some experience
Fair enough. If you’re willing to to take the pay cut and adjust your lifestyle accordingly (ie. live more frugally), go for it. But be strategic. Think long term about exit opportunities as well.
Do what you want when you want. Don’t live by other people’s rules. Life is short. Live it. Think of all the trail blazers who made their own rules. They didn’t do the safe route. They did what they wanted. Be happy now. Why wait?
With you OP. Trying to grind it out for 2 years but biglaw is not for me and I know it already, been in 5 months. Bad way to live, for me at least.
I don’t think there’s any specific amount of time that you *need* to stay. I’d do your best to hold on for a year but honestly, what’s the harm in looking around and interviewing now? Don’t settle and ensure you’re being picky about your next move but if you’re able to land a job now that is in the direction you want to go, why wait?
The best gift in life is knowing what you don’t want. Next, focus on what you do want and accept it shows up. Staying in the space of what you don’t want will not get you to what you do want.
*survive* the next four months while planning your route and obtaining a new position (takes some time) and then *thrive* 😋 good luck!
