Think about what will you do with that information? Say for instance you find out that one of you is making more than the other, can you do anything? Nah. My opinion is leave things the way they are and avoid some heartburn. You'll live a little longer.

If you’re close I would go for it. But the fact that you’re hesitating indicates that you are not as close as you think otherwise it’s a no brained who cares thing for me. I’ve had times where I asked for tips too cause sometimes the salary is dependent on negotiation at various stages including promos, half year mark, annual review, etc things I wouldn’t have known or had help if I had not asked.
Go for it. Transparency helps. A colleague of mine and I meet regularly to compare numbers and this has helped benchmark what we are making both within the company and in our industry.

He’s jokingly ball parked a figure he’s making, and for jokingly it wasn’t significantly higher then what I actually make. That’s why I’m assuming we make the same. My only hesitation of me not asking is how he’d feel if we’re making the same granted his experience on me, but I don’t think he’d take it hardly
