Hard disagree with BA1. B schools don’t want want perfect candidates that got everything they ever wanted. They want to see you’re a human being who has failed and grown from that failure.

I think it’s fine too, but frame it in a really positive way and make it 1 aspect rather than the whole story
Would avoid if you can. Why would they want someone with a late promo when their class (assuming you’re applying to a top school) is filled with people with early and on time promos?
That’s what I thought. To be fair, I got passed up for an early promo and instead got an on time promo, but your point still stands

I was passed up for an early promotion but got an on time promotion and I didn't mention it in my essays, but I did in a couple interviews. My interviewers seemed to like the story and my consultant thought it was a good story as well. I think since you did get an on time promotion, it could be a good growth story based on how you tell it.
If you didn’t get promoted though, should we write an explanation on your optional essay?
I’m currently having this debate. I didn’t get promoted because of affordability due to business impacts from covid. No one got promoted from my practice. My MBA coach (mbaMission) recommended I include a line in my essays and my recommenders mention it briefly as well. It would have been on the early side for my practice but still. It was literally out of my control.
What was the prompt?
