Is it better to be a big fish in a small pond, or a small fish in a big pond? Just got recruited with promotion/pay bump for a bigger firm but I’m in a great spot with my current firm. Suggestions?

Pay bump, promotion, and bigger firm/more name recognition > Lower pay, static role, & smaller firm. Unless your current firm can match I don’t see why you should stay. Also consider that if you are confident in your abilities, being a small fish in a big pond isn’t an inherently bad thing.

Thank you! I never thought of it this way

I was in the similar scenario before I moved to consulting from industry. Honestly, I regret making the move now. I went from owning my work beginning to end, having an impact on the company and having people look to me for answers. Now I do the boring scrub work of just take notes, making 50 iterations on PowerPoint decks until it satisfies the partners and sit on calls.

Did you know that’s what the new role would be before you accepted?

Do your due diligence on the new firm to make sure they’re not going to pressure you into becoming a wage slave, which is very likely.

Thank you for looking out! I have friends at the new firm and they’ve been trying to get me to go there for 6 months and I’ve been asking them all about it. But thank you for pointing it out!

It would all depend on your goal.

Depends on where you are in your career. If you’re more senior I’d say big fish small pond since you’d have more freedom in that pond. If you’re earlier in your career with much more to learn, the opposite

I’m pretty new in consulting! Graduated last May and worked at the smaller firm ever since.

What makes you happy? I'm big on quality of life so I've passed on moves that work wise would make me happy but would require relocations I don't want. I strongly prefer the big fish little pond because it allows me to better manage what I do...which is ironic b/c I now work at a massive firm.

Quality of life is much more than work life balance. How do you enjoy the work you do? There people you do it with? Where you do it? You spend lots of time at work, it's a big part of your life. You should enjoy it, or at least not hate it for a good quality of life.

In recent performance reviews, I received a level change and a pay raise effective March (so retroactive pay). Any advice on negotiating salary with a company you’ve been working with for a while? Spent the last year as a full-time contractor for my company and now they want to bring me on as official employee. If so, by how much? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Am I wrong in thinking I am the logically person to get a huge promotion? Background: I work on a Buying team as Buyers Assistant and I am currently the only person in my Category. I know the business, the product, the operating system and the vendors. However, I know nothing about buying but I quickly learn analytics and procedures. Wouldn’t it be easier to train me on buying vs training a buyer how our systems functions, our products, and how it moves in our company?

Anyone finds it manipulative and disingenuous for partners and directors to actively push you to take vacation due to it being slow.
