You should do both. Sometimes recruiters have jobs that are not posted on job search sites so you’ll have access to more opportunities. But no need to talk to too many of them since most of them have around the same job listings. Also remember they don’t really care about you, it’s just about money for them. At least this was my experience.
Yeah make sure you sell the fact that you in fact want out of your current position too. I made the of being wish washy about looking for opps but not really totally set on leaving.
My experience is that recruiters push you to take jobs that are obviously wrong for you (e.g. a role with a firm that just filed for bankruptcy). They generally do not care about your career path or goals. They earn commission once you take a job. So definitely do a lot of due diligence.
