I think it really comes down to how rent is split (e.g., evenly, by sq ft). Makes a huge difference actually if the apartment is affordable evenly but one roommate wants to pay significantly less by making say their flex bedroom tiny
In theory the more roommates the cheaper the place. The cost of “common areas” reduces with more people to split the cost with. Obviously as C1 mentioned, there can be arrangements that change that, but in general why would you live with more people if it was more expensive?

Not enough info. I know of people that have jammed 3 into a 1 BR. Some that will do 2 in a 1 BR. 3 in a 2BR. As with many other things, it really depends. What the hell are you trying to prove is the question?

Assuming you’re not flexing, then 3br. Flexing 2 in a 1br is probably cheaper than that.
No matter what, rent is too high in any desirable area in NY.
