Is it crazy to leave biglaw after one year for a corporate counsel position? Hate biglaw culture, don’t like my practice area and know it’s not the long term play but still wonder if there are benefits to sticking it out for another year or two (besides the money). In house has always been my goal so why not make the jump now?

Do it. If you hate where you are now and you have the opportunity to jump now, don’t wait.

If you really hate where you are you should leave. But going in-house this early you need to temper expectations for promotions and raises and make sure the company is a good fit. Also I should say hours aren’t always better I’m at a global company and often work between 60-70 hours a week with lots of late night and early morning calls because of time zones. There are definitely more traditional 9-5 in-house roles but they aren’t as common as people make them out to be.

I don’t disagree, but it depends on the company. If you are going to be on a big legal team, you will be more limited than if you are going to a company whose legal department runs lean. I made the same jump you’re contemplating and was promoted after 2 years. I probably would be making more if I’d stuck it out at my firm a little longer but that job was killing my soul and I knew the in-house opportunity may not come again.

GO NOW! Do not look back. You will never regret the move

Depends on the in-house gig — very difficult to paint in-house with a broad brush, other than generally less pay (and less eventual financial upside as compared to partnership or even senior associate) in exchange for more reasonable hours (usually). So choose carefully and do your diligence, so you are happy where you land. Each company and legal department has its own culture, expectations, potential for growth, etc. — generally a wider range of differences between roles/companies than BigLaw which is a little of a monolith. Tough but not impossible to go back to BigLaw. And you can always switch in-house jobs (but that’s easier if you stay within the same industry, and tougher to switch industries). Sometimes the grass seems greener than it is. Pros and cons. But I don’t think crazy. And if you’re miserable and don’t have the desire to stay much longer, then that sounds like you’ve already made your decision. Talk to a few senior associates and a few folks who have gone in-house, and take everyone’s advice with a grain of salt. Then decide for yourself, listening to both your head and heart. There are many paths to happiness and recipes for success. $200k for a 9-to-5 isn’t BigLaw rich, but it’s not a bad life and can be a good trade-off.

This is the proper guidance. Just be really careful you aren’t kneecapping your growth potential going in-house as a junior. A bigger in house department with good lawyers could be just as good of a development ground for you as a junior in a big law practice group, but mileage may vary.

like

It depends on what you want. Speaking from experience, life becomes significantly more difficult without “2-3 years of law firm experience” under your belt. It just does. Law firms want to know you have “a foundation.” Lawyers hiring in-house who have law firm experience want someone with a background similar to theirs. Non-lawyers hiring in-house think it’s necessary because that’s what they’ve been told and they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

Will it make any difference in your quality as a lawyer? Not in the slightest. Will it make a difference in how others seeking to fill positions evaluate your resume, absolutely. If you do leave, leave for something good that you hope will last a very long time... because it probably will whether you like it or not.

Agree with this. There’s a reason the first couple of years as a firm associate are challenging.

like

Yes, no reason to wait. Go now as long as the position is at a good company with room for advancement.

like

Why not indeed!

Do it. If you’re unhappy and hate your job, among other reasons, it’s a liability because your heart isn’t in it. Leave on good terms, on your terms.

Do it. I did it and never looked back. Learned a lot and had grown a lot. You only get one chance at this life.

What would you do if you were in between a mediocre official job offer with potential growth or waiting to hear back from a better opportunity (better pay by 10-20k more; better chance to get CPA license whereas the other doesnt)? I was told verbally that I was the only one who made the final interview and will hear back within a week. However, I had to respectfully ask the mediocre job to give me a week to make a decision. I’m afraid I’ll lose out on both opprotunities if I wait too long

Interviewing for L&E in house position for lateral move. Posting also says I would be advising on IP and M&A. I have experience in the 10 other or so areas they want that are all employment related. I don’t know if they’re holding out for a unicorn candidate, or I am missing something. I don’t know any L&E attys who have IP or M&A experience. Is there an employment law component to these practice areas? And do I just say I have zero experience? The position is a solid fit for me otherwise.

I’m considering an in-house role in franchise law and I’m concerned about long-term growth. Is this an area in which I’ll end up pigeonholing myself and limiting future options?
