Just recieved a offer from Western Alliance Bank for a Senior Business Analyst role. Comp 100k but the role would be in office. I currently work remote, have unlimited PTO,and a really healthy work life balance but am being underpaid tremendously. The new role seems like it does not have healthy work life balance and many red flags have already come up. I want to grow my skills and wouldn't mind being in office as I do miss being around people. How do I vet the role before accepting?

For me, I couldn't even imagine going back full time, or even 3 days a week. Probably in the office once or twice every two weeks for more than an hour, otherwise I just come in for occasional meetings or if I need to talk to someone face to face. Depends on your goals, but if you aren't breaking the bank on your current salary I would stay where you are and put your name in the ring for a raise there. Commuting is a bitch and it's expensive, plus it's just outdated at this point in my opinion unless your job requires you to operate machinery or something.
I went from fully remote during pandemic to hybrid (3x/week) for twice the pay. So yeah, I took the offer.
I’ve come to realize that although I’d always PREFER to be remote, I’m pretty productive when I’m in the office because distractions are removed (like talking to my husband who’s also remote - he likes when I’m in the office only so we’re not talking over each other in meetings). I also don’t have strong connections with colleagues here which otherwise would’ve made in-office days just as distracting for me.
Part of me thinks having this requirement to go in ensures a level of productivity for the week, but I also think that if I’m fully remote, I’d adapt and learn to be productive at home too. 🤷🏻♀️ Still prefer twice the pay though and the work I’m doing at this job, so I’m staying until I can find another job that’s essentially the same but remote.
If you’re willing to stay at your current job and shoot for the raise, you might as well get the other company to pay an increased amount that would make traveling worth it (maybe +15k?) or decline the offer. If they need you, great! You’ll get a higher pay. If not, you’re not totally disappointed since you’re still remote.
I would stay back at the current place and ask for a raise. Don’t think I will ever take any offer than asks me to go into office more than once a week.
Great minds think alike
After working from home for over two and a half years I really miss the office. Being able to ask someone a question face to face is an invaluable benefit, and also really makes you feel like a part of something bigger. Additionally focusing on work at home when you have three roommates like I do can be impossible at times. Separation of work and home doesn’t exist, so it can be hard to start/end the day and go back to normal things. Maybe I’m a weirdo who actually enjoys things outside of work but I value my free time and working from home makes that much harder for me. Now however even when I go into the office it’s empty so it doesn’t feel like it matters either way anymore, but I would give a lot to get back the old work environment we had before the pandemic.
