Well what is he looking for from you? At most places, partnership requires a sizable buy-in since you’re becoming a part owner of a firm, which just might not be feasible early on since you haven’t had as many years to save. If he’s going to have you buy less than 50%, I’d be a little wary since he’s the only other partner and that means anything he decides is final, regardless of your stake in the partnership. Also, it’s a lot of responsibility at your stage of your career to have primary responsibility for bringing in and servicing clients. When you’re an owner, the business lives or dies with you and your efforts. At a bigger firm there’s more buffer since your other partners can float you during a year your practice isn’t doing well (and vice versa), with a 2 person partnership, not so much.
Not saying you shouldn’t do it, but that’s all stuff I’d be thinking long and hard about.
Fair. I appreciate the perspective. So far, he’s only gauged my interest and said he wanted to get the books in order so I could review them. So from an outside perspective, it’s like: if you don’t just keep your house in order, do you want to give me more responsibility and some more money, or what’s the reasoning for partnership? We haven’t had too in depth convos yet. I’m a first gen atty so I was just like: wait? What? … now I’m doing all the leg work of seeing what I need to know and assess to decide.
