Is it frowned upon to have a second job? Like accounting tutor, part-time AP, etc. I don’t think the salary cuts it.

Don’t listen to the person above. I too have found it hard to live off of my salary and have had jobs on the side. Just wouldn’t mention it to your team

^^^ LOl at what this person imagines new associates in big cities spend money on. Um BMW? Try no car LOL

like

^I think this is an example of failure from above to comprehend base price cost of living. If you have student loan payments, city rent, car payment for work travel - $50k will have you struggle. Tbh, the firms need to be prepared for employees to come dressed in rags and have part time jobs if their business cannot provide the financial stability itself. I mean - they have to outsource to remain competitive as is.

like

Look at Mr. Money bags that can’t live on $50k per year. If you don’t think the salary cuts it, then you should probably examine your spending. To actually answer your question, a 2nd job generally would be received poorly, especially during busy season when you are expected to work a ton of hours.

likefunny

Yeah, maybe the person living like a king on $50K lives in Oklahoma or something lol. In big Northeast cities, even high $50’s is a joke, even with roommates, and some of us have student loans to pay as well. While working at big 4 I did a thing or two on the side because their crappy salary couldn’t pay my bills.

^In-state public school and Japanese car. See my prior post from above to reiterate the message I said earlier. What makes it more funny - that in state public college with 4 years undergrad and a grad year had a $111k price tag. Base price living with zero comprehension of that.

You could join the worlds oldest profession part time.

Lol am I the only one who thought pwc1 was only being sarcastic? Everyone knows staff salaries are a joke, literally qualifies for low income assistance in SF. Senior and up it gets much better, don’t worry 👍 Not sure how helpful this is, but I do surveys on the side. Mostly about $50-100/hour. I don’t do it regularly but can probably make an extra $300/month. It’s interesting how much money they pay for qualified professionals as opposed to random students, etc

like

Nobody told you to go spend $100k on a standard degree or forced you to buy a BMW to get to your client site. If you are in a high cost of living area it may be a bit tighter, but oh my gosh you just may have to have roommates for a few years. Again, there is no reason you should be struggling in this field that pays extremely generously for recent grads with zero experience.

Be a uber driver. Set your own hours to accommodate busy season.

Have you thought about evening baby-sitting (during low season?). Idk about your cities but demand is CRAZY in SF. Try a website like Care or urban sitter, they go about $20-30/hour in my city. Seems a lot more chill than Uber, in my opinion. I would consider this during low season just cuz I love kids. 😊

I use sis focus group and schlesinger group. They are usually $100-200 per survey (usually a video survey or in person)

Just be careful that your side job doesnt have the appearance of "competing with" your Firm. I know some Senior Managers/PPEDs who teach at local colleges part time. No big deal. But if you were preparing tax returns etc., that would be a big deal. If in doubt, ask your HR consultant or Partner to whom you report. As mentioned above, their primary question to you will be "will this interfere with your responsibilities to our clients?". If your client work won't suffer and you are not competing with the Firm, I do not see a reason why anyone would tell you "No way."

@EY3- where are you doing these surveys? All the surveys I've done aren't worth doing, since The comp is essentially nothing.

Lol when would you have capacity for a side job...? there’s barely enough time in a week to work 60 hours, do household chores, work out, maintain relationships with friends and family, and sleep. If you’re making time for a side job, it’s going to affect your performance at work regardless of how much you think you can handle.

After Taxes I make 3300 a month my rent in NYC with roommates is 900, School Loans, 300, Utilities, 100, Parents Bills (They are elderly) 600, Food 300, 900 left to save which doesn’t include happy hours, weddings and etc. Yeah I can save if I just sit at home and do nothing for the rest of my life

Two of my colleagues Uber drive

I have a second job! It’s come up casually in conversation with a lot of my managers and they all say wow good for you! I think everyone should seek out multiple sources of income

My last day with Deloitte was a week ago - I signed several authorization forms allowing them to withhold from my final paycheck the 1/2 of my sign-on bonus I owe back for leaving in 1.5 years, sans some FICA taxes. It’s to the point that if it wasn’t on the same thread as the original email, I would assume it’s a scam. Wtf?
