Only go to happy hour if you are happy

likehelpful

That is true haha

I’d rather be digging ditches but they’re important early in your career. Try to attend most of them while you’re an associate and senior.

likefunny

I wouldn’t say it’s ever “frowned upon” but it does help build a little bit of a connection to your coworkers. If it’s a smaller team/group and you’re constantly missing social events that everyone else is attending, it is noticed.

I almost always skip, but I have a good excuse only married staff with a kid

likesmart

Sounds like you have somebody to watch the kid then... Excuse denied.

If you skip Bc intimidated or nervous, chat up other staff so you can be each other's "buddy" on location. I always felt super awkward at happy hours (I don't drink much) and now keep an eye out for anyone who feels uncomfortable/ out of place so I can chat them up. I wouldn't judge someone for not going but enjoy seeing other people more informally
Pro tip : no need to have alcohol at happy hour. You can have soda or orange juice instead if you don't want to get drunk but want a drink, or hate alcohol

There was only 1 person that missed my start class's first happy hour together during training week a couple years ago. We still poke fun but only because they take it harder on themselves for missing than we ever cared. It's just funny. No one really cares, if you can't/dont want to go, then don't!

Not at all, but might be good to give a heads up if you’re expected to be there

Why wouldn’t you want to have a hour of happiness?!?

Wtf, what makes you think that lol
