I have my first consulting interview coming up and I just graduated from a non target school. What worked for me was just networking on here and it helped me land my first interview. Other then that, I’ve tried applying many times and nothing ever happened.

Work in industry first. Get an MBA. Then go to consulting
M1 for me it was 6.5 years
Just apply. The worse that can happen is that a company rejects you. Make sure your CV is in order and do some practice interviews. I did not apply to many positions because I was scared that I may not qualify - later found that I could have qualified. A lot of people told me it's very hard to do this and that. I later found out that people often projected their insecurities, whether it was knowingly or unknowingly is another question.
If you get rejected then get another job that you would enjoy, work there for a few years and then try to move into consulting, if you are still interested.
Hard? Yes. Impossible? No. I am not from a target school.l but got lucky with an interview. Took it from there.
A friend of mine I got an interview for and he got the job because of my referral.
Don’t even bother without a referral from here
I was in the same boat from a non-target school. I was able to network to get in a boutique consulting firm first with only industry experience but no consulting experience. I was later able to use the boutique consulting experience to get into a big 4 consulting as a manager.
How long did you do boutique consulting for and which big 4 did you get into?
Referrals. That helped me from a get in from a non-target state school
It’s hard if you are starting in the graduate program from zero experience. But internships and work exp can help a lot.
