Is it hard to pivot to other specialty tax group like international tax or FDD? 6 YOE in ASC 740 regional firm and wanted to explore other areas of tax. Washington DC metro area if that matters.

Not at all. I pivoted to international from SALT pretty seamlessly. There will be a bit of catch-up on the technical since you’re coming at manager YOE, but definitely doable.

I wouldn’t call FDD a tax group. If anything, FDD is an audit group since a vast majority of FDD people come from audit backgrounds

It’s very difficult to get into FDD from tax

I think your timing is excellent. With Pillar Two, the book min tax, etc, 740 skills are invaluable. I agree there is a learning curve, and you might be better coming in as a Senior Associate. But if you’re thinking long-term, that shouldn’t matter.

DM me if you’d like to discuss opportunities in DC.

Come to tax tech. They value asc 740 experience

Not that hard but I believe you have to start over, ( title, learning curve, etc). international tax is a whole different world than 740. Some areas of 740 can be very specialty too such as transaction, M&A, they are more helpful to your current career

I know a few people who transitioned from BTS to international later in their careers (around manager). We do provisions in International too so that experience is helpful.

I’m at a mid sized regional firm. Partner I work with only wants to do litigation but it doesn’t keep all the associates busy. So, he takes on whatever random projects come he gets calls on, but will say things like “we gotta pretend like we’ve done this a thousand times.” It makes me uncomfortable because we haven’t and it’s specialized things like doing all the filings to establish an HMO (which we don’t do). He then ghosts and we’re left trying to figure it all out. Is this normal?

Joined a company months ago in a new industry and was told to own the company enterprise roadmap. It’s a new pillar for the company (of 4). Since I’m new and lack industry experience, is it a fair ask that my boss or their boss should be able to articulate the vision for that? Or set objectives/goals? They reply with just “you own the roadmap” and quite frankly I feel like they don’t know what they’re doing (they both don’t have domain expertise either). Am I being set up for failure?

If anyone know of a lead or have any advice for me that would be wonderful! Thank you!

KPMG reached out to me earlier this week and I’m interviewing for a tax position tomorrow morning. JD working on CPA. Working for a regional firm right now making $79k. I like it, but the benefits aren’t great.

Would anyone working in tax at KPMG recommend making the switch? What do your hours look like? Are you satisfied with the benefits?

If any experienced candidates are looking for tax or audit senior or manager level roles and would consider CohnReznick, please DM me. Positions are fully remote to the extent you want them to be, and CR also has a reimbursement program for higher education (Masters, MBA, JD), which is a difficult benefit to find these days. DM me to find out more!

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

It seems like everyone is in agreement that switching firms gives you a salary boost, but that you could be viewed as someone that doesn’t stick around. Has anyone felt like they got held back from jumping firms every 2-3 years for the salary bump? I know peers that bounced around 2-4 times in a 7 year span and they are making significantly more money than if they stayed at their first job, however it didn’t seem like any of the new companies cared that they bounced around. Other experiences?
