Is it helpful for you to know our current salary? I was asked by a recruiter but I’m hesitant to disclose it especially I’m moving to a different market with a highly different market rate.

I’m talking about third party recruiters not internal agency recruiters.

you don’t answer that. period.

Don’t know what state you’re in, but that question is illegal in a lot of states. They can’t ask you what your current salary is, but can ask you’re looking for in your next role.

like

You should tell them what your expectation for comp is so that they can know if they are in the ballpark. But no need to tell them what you make now.

like

I take my total performance bonus in with my salary, saying my next role needs to at least match it (for base alone) for me to consider moving.

like

Do not tell them. Tell the recruiter what you’d like to make. If they ask again your salary tell them it’s private.

like

Not just private, but if you’re in a state where it’s illegal, say “I thought that was illegal to ask?”

like

No, don’t tell them. That said make sure you know your market value and be ready to share that if they ask for comp expectations.

like

Most recruiters should have a good idea of where you’re at anyway. However, my clients (agencies) expect me to know. I always ask. And yes, this is usually illegal. This is a trust question.

Most times, I don’t get paid unless you get the job.

Knowing as much as I can helps you get the job.

If I’m reading this right, you’re saying that you still ask people for their current salary even though you know it’s illegal in many places? 😳 If so, shame on you, you’re just perpetuating the cycle. There’s a reason these laws are in place. Any staffing firm recruiter worth their salt knows the market well enough to be able to counsel their clients AND candidates on market compensation without needing to ask for candidates’ current salaries. If you were working on behalf of my agency and I found out you were asking candidates for their current salaries, I’d fire you. It not only reflects poorly on you, but on the agencies you represent as well.

Yeeesh what a question! And so irrelevant to what you'd be making in the new role (which should be based on experience level, job description, entire compensation package etc. and NOT what you're currently making! I had a coworker leave our old company, go to a new company with an almost identical job description and she made $50K more!)

Also just a heads up Emily, you are posting un anonymously. If you talk about any uh spicy subjects on here you might want to change to your job title of company just to be safe

I've heard multiple people say at a certain age, it no longer makes sense to make partner. What does that even mean? I know you typically have to be a partner for 10 years to fully vest in the pension. But even if I were a partner for just 2 years, isn't it still better to be a partner? Year 1 partner comp might be almost same as your comp the year you made partner due to health insurance and buy in, but it's not like you're worse off as a partner. And you get your buy in back when you leave.

I’m interviewing at 2 different companies this week that I’m really excited about. One is a contract coordinator position that has potential to turn full time. I feel pretty confident as a coordinator and think they will want to hire me full time. I have never worked a contract position so I’m curious if you guys have any pros/cons? What pay should i look for per hour @ a startup for a coordinator role? The other interview is for a salary coordinator position @ a public company

I got a verbal offer from a WPP agency today. The role's budgeted salary is 5k less than my desired salary.
The recruiter can get me closer but still not at my desired salary. Otherwise - it would have to go through a long approval process with no guarantee that the salary would even be OK'd.
I'm coming from a small agency, so I could be wrong - but I don't want to sell myself short by accepting the first salary they offer. Do I have any room to negotiate? Or is that risky?
