For me to find out that she hadn’t presented me and was trying to steer me a to a particular (inferior) position with a repeat client
Ask recruiter if they gave you any feedback as to why they didn’t want to pursue interview, and can always try reaching out. Although 10 days sounds to me like firm probably had an offer out there already and was waiting to hear back
You have nothing to lose so why not go direct.
There are a couple things to unpack - first, there a ton of reasons the firm could have decided they did not want to interview you (other better candidates; internal referral; conflicts; and/or direct submission from comparable candidates) and realistically there is no way that an outside recruiter can guarantee they would. So I would definitely suggest having some realistic expectations and wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that the recruiter is shady based simply on one firm deciding to not interview you.
Second, sure you can go ahead and apply direct but it sounds like you are better off directing your energy to submitting your application to other positions that you have not already been rejected from - that will give you a better idea about how marketable you really are so you can compare the results to the positions that your recruiter has submitted you to.
Definitely go with your gut with 50 applications out there and a great resume something ain’t adding up.
I did this once. Had a pretty non responsive recruiter and suspected that she hadn’t actually put me up for the role when I heard nothing for weeks. I followed her up, and she said she heard nothing further from the employer.
A month or so later, I saw that employer readvertise the same role online in a new job ad. I applied direct, got an interview the next day, and got a job offer the day after that.
In my case, either the recruiter had a few applicants and was lazy - or more likely I think - she didn’t actually have the job posting and was offering candidates unsolicited.
Work with a recruiter that you can trust. I am a former attorney now recruiter and I would never push another agenda for a candidate. Not the way I choose to do business. Try to figure out hard details on why the firm may have passed on you. The firm would likely still owe the recruiter a fee if they all of a sudden tried to interview you.
With that said if you have some connection to the firm then try to leverage your connection. I did that while I was practicing… I got rejected through a recruiter submission but I realized I had a friend of a friend who worked at the firm who was then able to get me an interview. The downside of you go around the recruiter and get rejected again is possibly not being considered in the future if it’s somewhere you really want to be. Start by trying to get specific feedback from the recruiter if you can. Happy to chat with you having been on both sides though. Feel free to DM me.
If you were presented to the firm via recruiter then they will likely not respond to you directly or if they do they’ll ask you to please make contact through your recruiter
Be suuuuuuper careful about this. I had a recruiter present me to a firm, the firm passed, and then I got a job at the firm through a friend from school. Recruiter flipped when she heard and wanted her commission from the firm even though she did exactly nothing to get me hired. I believe it was all resolved amicably, but gave me serious heartburn.
She was likely entitled to it under her contract in fairness it would be incredibly easy for firms to dodge paying recruiters this way
