Is it inappropriate to wear a nice watch to client sites as an analyst? Think entry-level Rolex/Omega

I agree with D1, I have the omega moon watch and only people that care about watches notice it. If you do a Rolex, I would stick to the basics and get a sub. It would probably be a little weird if an analyst pulled up in a Daytona lol

Black datejust with non-fluted bezel, and with the roulette date change 😍

No it’s an issue because it’s a flashy and superfluous item that is indicative of excessive wealth. It’s not like you’re wearing your favorite pair of sneakers to the office on casual fridays. Extravagance makes a statement. I used to work with an analyst who rocked a Datejust every day in the office. I have my own submariner at home which is 3x the cost of his but I never once considered wearing at at the office. I’m not jealous of him, I just think it’s a statement no one should make as a junior employee. Maybe I would after working for 10 years but otherwise no chance. As a consultant subtleties matter quite a bit. It’s comparable to Gucci loafers or Louboutons as an analyst. Significant downside, no upside.

Unless you have a gold or two-tone submariner, that would mean they were wearing an old DJ 36 (if your watch is 3x theirs). How do you know it's not an inheritance from their father or grandfather?

Generally, no one cares. If you’re going to a rust belt industrial facility to lay people off, maybe don’t wear the watch.

I would wear the full set instead. Go big or go home.

Unpopular opinion…. I feel like it’s a little cringey to wear a Rolex or other flashy watch on a client site until you’re at least a Manager (mayyyybe senior consultant). Seeing a low level analyst wearing a Rolex would make me think they make poor financial decisions. Stick to an Apple Watch, and upgrade the band to something classier. IMO.

Wear whatever you want, if someone has an issue it’s because you make them feel insecure

As long as it’s not Hublot

Rolexes are so well known that clients might notice them. Most other tasteful watches will fly under the radar.

like

Few, if any, people will notice. And those that do will think that you’re wasting money. Lol

It's a know your audience kinda thing. In NY at a financial client, sure! At a public sector agency or a warehouse? No way.

I switched from my Rolex to an AP. Hopefully it's less noticeable 🤗.

Please link me a steel Patek sports watch that's under $50k. I guess I wasn't clear, but I said I switched out my Rolex for an AP, which is a corollary of what the OP posted. Why would you assume I was talking about a Rolex Cellini, aka the only "dress" Rolex watch where a Patek dress watch would be a suitable replacement? You'll also note that I was asking about it being less noticeable. Feel like Patek on the dial is more showy than an AP.

I love and wear my Omega Seamaster religiously

Wore a Rolex submariner to client sites for 2 years as an analyst and no one cared

Imagine me making up a whole story in my head about a person because of a watch. Delusional. Wear your watch hun! If people think anything of it in judgement that just shows your how utterly ridiculous they are.

Do an Apple Watch and change the bands….

I've an android phone though

Lmao it’s a watch who cares?

Why wear a watch? Your phone tells time 🙄 It’s like asking if you should wear jewelry. You know the answer then.

I say go for it. I wear a date-just when I go in. Was a little self conscious about it at first but eventually realized who cares, I wear it for me

Wore a sub to a client site as a first year for months and the only person to say anything was a SM I worked for and it was bc he was into watches and it ended up being a great conversation starter

If it’s a cost out study then be especially mindful of the perceptions.

Are you only wearing it for other people? Don’t care so much about what others think of you. You’ll enjoy life much more.

If u got it like that!

How do you represent your time consulting on your resume when looking to go back to industry? I've been on the same A&D project for my year+ at ACN. i.e. what do you share about client work?

Need some advice - been at the D for a year and have been on the same implementation project for over a year. Have a technical background and am thinking of starting to look for exits to industry but also am curious what strategy projects are and if I would be interested in the work. Is it worth networking onto a strategy project at the D or should I just continue to look for industry exists and then go b school and then try for MBB/T2 ?
