Given that there’s no equivalent for children, I would say yes
Regardless of what you are negotiating, try to understand your value to the agency. Anything is possible under the right circumstances.
Now, for the rest of you dog hating Trump supporters...To most people, at pet is considered a family member. Try loving something more than your last Selfie. If I ever had to choose between my dog and my job, my boy wins.
And one more thing incase we ever meet. If I had to choose between my dog and you, he wins that too.
Yes. But please do it. And tell us all how it goes.
Yes. And this is coming from a dog owner.
No!! Negotiate for what you need!
Why not ask for more money to compensate for the travel aspect?
Yes thats insane. People need to calm this dog thing down before we really go over the edge. Heres an idea from 20 years ago--maybe you get rid of your dog since it doesnt really let you take this job, which is WAY more important.
Dont mention your dog to the new employer. You will sound like a loon.
Ask for more salary to compensate for the extra travel. Don't bring up the dog. It's a dog, that you voluntarily chose to bring into your life, along with it's associated expenses. And it's not going to grow-up, get educated, pay taxes, and contribute to our national well-being. The dog is not your agency's responsibility, it's yours.
Haha, BBDO1, what on earth? I don’t ask my agency to pay for dog expenses, but I do absolutely value my dog more than my job. I can’t even tell you how quickly I would make the financially irresponsible decision to choose my dog over current employment. I can get another job, but I can’t replace my dog. I made a commitment as a pet owner to take care of my dog to the best of my ability.
Yeah you can do that, if you say that travel will incur more expenses for you ask for something to even that out. Could be a little more annual pay, could be they reimburse kennel fees, work it out together.
Honestly I would love to negotiate the childcare costs just to pick up my kid from daycare because my agency can’t function without people physically in the office in the evenings. So I’d love for you to do this too bc agencies have taken advantage of those of us who want to be whole people for too long.
As a dog owner - trust me I understand the cost of boarding associated with work travel. still keep your mouth shut.
I would negotiate it as “salary commensurate with the cost associated with increase travel” and leave it open.
Or just ask yourself if you can make things work before you take a role. Don’t bring your house business to the office if you don’t want your business in your house.
@SCw, thats kind of what Im talking about with the current Dog Worship Culture. Im sorry--Im really not trying to be a dick--but "I cant replace my dog?" You absolutely can, and in 8 or 9 years or whatever, you absolutely will. That doesnt make you a bad pet owner; it just makes you a regular person with a proper perspective on things.
Dogs (and other pets) are awesome, and of course Ive had dogs I loved. But talking about them like children is way, way too much.
@SCw, of course thats fine (and I SWEAR Im not a monster), but in LA anyway, letting people do what makes them happy has led to dogs in restaurants, in grocery stores, in gyms, in Home Depot, on aiplanes, ten or twenty dogs in the office, and people putting "Dog Parent" for their occupation on Bumble.
In other words, its affecting other people. Any questions in public places are testily met with "its a service dog," which everyone knows is bullshit. And pretty soon people are saying things like "can I negotiate dog expenses with my new job" and not knowing for 100% certain that they sound insane.
So, again, dogs are great, but it's gone way, way, WAY too far, perspective wise. (Not to mention instagram 😃)
I haven’t done it but in my next move will consider negotiating a stipend for it. I spend and insane amount in boarding costs due to work travel...
@mike cicale I’m sorry you’ve never had a loving relationship with a human. Keep trying tho.
CD1 I think the reason most people love their dogs more than humans is BECAUSE they’ve had relationships with other humans...
I dunno. Seems like this is getting into the whole debate over whether people with kids...or dogs...should be treated differently than those without (I'm a parent, and they should not). In our industry, generally people don't have either until their salary is such that they can afford them. Your "whole people" thought would be a good argument in favor of overtime pay across the board. But with agency profit margins as slim as they have been over the last 10+ years, I just don't see it being feasible.
If individuals can negotiate a higher salary because their skills are in that high a demand, rock on. But I think that framing it as, "I need more money to afford day-care or dog-care"...not really the company's responsibility.
Liking a dog more than a stranger: of course. Considering a pet a family member: sure. Thinking a pet is a child: no. Valuing a dog more than a job: childish, financially irresponsible, and objectively pretty stupid.
How you get Trump supporter (or anything about selfies?) out of feeling that way I have no idea. Trump is a much bigger idiot than anyone who talks about their dog in a job interview.
Dogs are great. Theyre not magic, theyre not children, and you dont need to talk about yours all the time.
You can love them and remember theyre just pets--theyre definitely not more important than your friends or your job.
