Is it just EY or all Big4 are extremely short on seniors these days? I keep seeing managers’ posts here that they are working with staff directly.

Im about to leave as a rising senior. The current salary rate does not match the abuse you take, also with the information around via linkedin people are starting to see other alternative paths beside public.

Oooof

It has become a pattern to me...every time when I get promoted, people below me just all quit and makes me the direct preparer of everything🤷‍♀️. With only 6 years in I don’t know if this is just cyclical based on the economy or maybe Gen Z and us millennials are finally saying no to these bad cultures. Hopefully it’s the latter.

Wait there are teams that have managers AND seniors on them? Where is this magical firm? 😂

It’s like spotting a unicorn- is it even real!?

I think seniors give the most bang for their buck. Do the most value for the firm but get paid the least (relatively speaking compared to the value provided). Seniors are often 2- 6 years in their careers, often times long enough to know most of the ropes, but not long enough for the year over year salary increases to kick in and be felt. It’s a feeling of being overworked and underpaid, and nobody likes that. At higher levels and tenure you at least get higher pay to coincide with the overworked feeling.

I'm one of those outgoing seniors. It's all 4 firms. No point staying in a miserable industry job when I can leave for a cushy six-figure salary, 45 hour weeks, and upward promotional potential to a nice controller / cao position. You have no reason to stay past first-year senior unless you want to be a partner.

If they want ppl to stay, they need to pay more or cut hours. Can't have their cake and eat it.

PwC 3 , wouldn’t you know I am a manager 😉 this strategy worked for me!

It’s not just you, OP. there are some engagements where it’s just me and the partner. And I’m a first year staff. This is at a midsize. It’s been a great opportunity with lots of exposure, but rough and stressful nonetheless

Lack of seniors is a pervasive problem in public accounting, no matter how large or small the firm.

It’s been an issue for the last 20 years. Seniors will always be in high demand - both in public and industry. Seniors are awesome.

My team now has 3 SM, up from one. We also used to have 3 seniors...down to zero. The pyramid scheme at EY doing its job nicely

Our tax group hasn’t had a senior promoted to manager in 3 years because they keep leaving for traditional accounting roles.

It’s not even that they’re unhappy here. They just want to do traditional accounting more than tax.

like

Well it’s possible they didn’t want to burn bridges. Maybe they weren’t happy but weren’t sure if the new job would be any better so they wanted a place they maybe could return to.

yah, short on seniors too. Seen lots of managers leave tho, so seniors have to do their jobs too

like

Maybe this isn’t the norm, but my team has like 4 seniors and 4 managers. Only 2 staff, getting another in a couple of weeks.

dont see it here. i see Seniors promoted to Manager. maybe it's the major engagements I'm on.

As a senior, I am dealing with trying to get answers from management but those above me want to be the filter and asker of all questions with the client. That is fine, each team has a preference.

But the questions do not seem to get asked or when they do the answer isn't right. How do others deal with this issue?
