Is it just Grant Thornton or are other firms experiencing massive turnovers? I see articles about The Great Resignation happening this year but the rate we're losing people at GT is nuts.

I was on a Pwc webcast recently where they said that turnover decreased at the beginning of the pandemic but more recently it’s “back to normal levels”. It doesn’t feel normal, especially because we seem to be struggling with filling the positions.

And yet PwC took two months to call me about my application…

I don’t think it’s limited to Grant Thornton. The big difference from what I’ve seen in the last 6 months compared to the past on my end is that we’re losing people to other public accounting firms, not just industry

like

Let's say you actually like public accounting and want to continue on that career path. Firms of similiar sizes will have materially equivalent development opportunities. So you can continue on your current career path but undo 2020's negative effect on salaries by jumping to another public accounting firm.

IMHO it seems like Boomer leadership is just completely clueless industry wide. They'd rather lose half their workforce to other firms than give out fair raises that make up for last year.

likesmart

I’d say the most clueless aspect at GT was the thinking that people (mostly seniors) wouldn’t leave until the after FY year end in July. As if they couldn’t do the math and then get the new place they went to meet what the bonus and raise would be. So shortsighted and antiquated thinking.

like

The recent commentary I’ve seen specific to PA is that it’s single people who are leaving. Likely because they had to sit at home all year by themselves and only had work to keep them busy. After awhile it became apparent that they hated their jobs when they didn’t have anything else in their lives to temper it with. Mind you I’m a single person and I don’t disagree.. 🤷

I have 3 kids that are in elementary school and i considered divorce and giving full custody to spouse with 30% of my pay just so i could function. All ended well, but not without major hit to everyone’s mental health. My point is, it was sucky for everyone in different degrees and we’re all now on the upward track so i will give another year before making the decision to jump boat.

like

“The Great Resignation” lmao I love that

GT dropping like flies for sure. Losing on average one senior every 2 weeks. Winning new clients hella. And not hiring any new people, resulting in those who choose to stay being over worked with no additional pay or title bump. #byeeeee

You should try! Doesnt hurt

Every firm is seeing it

like

People are realizing how terrible the working conditions are in PA compared to industry. Big PA firms are going to continue to deal with a lack of employees unless they change their antiquated ways.

likesmart

That and let people back into an office if they want one! We have to hotel, sorry, but I left B4 so I could have my own space. Now they took that away so every perk I have ever had from PA is now gone.

Yup, this is at most firms. It’s what happens when employees get overworked + in person benefits of public disappeared + it’s a great market so there are plenty of great opportunities to jump to.

like

How many employees?

High turnover here too, not enough being done to retain people and plenty of opportunities elsewhere

like

Fr what I heard, it is everywhere... Big or small... My old middle size firms are giving fast promotion to seniors to try to keep them. You know how desperate they are

like

Soon we will be like contractors “sorry; we cannot do your return or audit until August 8…” which honestly I don’t mind: it’s high time the whole industry realizes getting everything done in two months is stupid. The banks will have to deal. So will the owners.

likefunny

I've heard in my city from a recruiter that loads of people have left public for accounting and that audit is particularly hard to fill vacancies at Big 4 and midtiers right now.

like

how much is big money?

I think it’s people leaving that would’ve left this and last year — the last year ones are essentially everyone who wanted to but didn’t get to last year or who was afraid to

I know people over at GT. They tell me GT is absolutely screwing up with how they are treating people. A few actually joined my practice the past few months

GT3 hit it spot on. This is why I left GT this year and haven’t looked back. GT is toxic AF

like

The in office perks are what make PA bearable. Take those away and it’s literally just misery.

Deloitte pays out AIP this week. I’m curious how that impacts resignations over the next few weeks.

Can confirm, heavy T/O is happening here

like

From what I've seen, turnover has been insane at GT especially at the Senior level.

like

Yep, lost 40% of seniors in my group since December, almost all to industry.

Crowe is losing tons of people

like

Funny, I haven't seen the turnover and personally really like Crowe. I can't complain about the pay (increase last year and bonus was good) . . . I enjoy the people I work with, even when we are remote, and believe they have my best interest in mind.

Yeah def not just GT. Just sharing our experiences BT1
