All of this "comply" with orders stuff reminds of the excuses people use when blacks a murdered by police officers. You have the RIGHT to refuse to obey orders that you think are unlawful! #1, everyone keeps referring to this "contract". The average passenger books their flight, pays, and expects an easy process once his money has been taken. If not, he may chose to fly another airline. But his choice was TAKEN from him when not only he booked and paid for the flight, he boarded and was in his seat. The incompetence of the airport has no barring on this mans state of mind. For example I was headed to an international trip. Some kinda way the airline booked TWO people in the same seat...I'm not even sure how that's possible, BUT we were in quite a bad place. She was going to Jamaica with a friend and I had a connector to another country. I couldn't imagine someone deciding to drag me off the plane though I booked my ticket FOUR months in advance.

You guys realize not all doctors work in an ED or ER, right? If he had patients... with appointments... these are by definition non-emergent. I am an EMT and work shifts 3x a month. He could also be a PhD in just about any field... and correctly state that he is a doctor. His occupation has absolutely nothing to do with whether this was ok or not. It wasn't ok by any measure if you judge based only on the context of the video. But let's take occupation out of it. Side question, did you all see the "second" video of him getting back on the plane? There was definitely something more going on here... I see a couple signs of AMS (altered mental status) I have seen in the field, and I do not think he should have been allowed to reboard the plane in that state. It's possible there is a mental issue here, but what I'm worried about is his erratic behavior when he got back on the plane... repeating phrases like that and disorientation are two very common signs he may have been concussed. 😕

Simple solution here, offer $500 to a volunteer, then $1,000, etc. Keep increasing until you get one. I don't get it.

like

Regardless of his occupation. If United didn't realize they needed seats until after boarding, and if no one took them up on their offer to volunteer - then that's on the company. They can refuse the right to board, I don't see them being able to remove a passenger for a fault that clearly an operational planning error.

like

United fucked up. That said, if an Air Marshal or other uniformed law enforcement officer tells to get off an airplane, get the fuck off the plane.

like

PC1, fair. But are you honestly telling me there was no better way for them to handle this situation? They picked a random guy, he said no. They decided to pursue law enforcement before trying to see if anyone else might have voluntarily left? This appears to have escalated very quickly and that's on United

like

And apparently he was a doctor who needed to get to his patients the next day! (Assuming reporting is accurate of course) it's not like he was a college kid trying to get to spring break or something

like

I see two separate issues. UA screwed up the process. But the tazer and dragging off plane was not UA staff as far as I can tell.

like

You don't have patients waiting PC1. Nobody's life is impacted if you can pitch your damn PowerPoints. Lol

like

They can ask you to get off the plane at any time. It is in your contract.

like

Something being "in the contract" doesn't necessarily mean they can physically force you to perform. There are plenty of things that, when breached from a contractual POV, you seek damages after the fact. Asking law enforcement to get involved on the spot is more than just breaching a contract (sorry I'm a lawyer). I definitely think there's more to this story that we don't know.

like

It really was disturbing. What they don't tell you is that his wife voluntarily got off the plane along with 2 other passengers, all they had to do is select someone else. Has anyone found an article with his identity? I want to know what hospital he works at.

Another reason why united is a terrible airlines

I'm deeply torn on this...I'm a humanitarian and a United 1K member 😢

Contract aside, I think the airline has a responsibility to ensure dignified treatment. The same could happen to any of us, and imagine you have a such family member to get to, or a big client presentation in the morning. I signed up for an American Airlines challenge today, to get a status match, and fly AA from hereon

like

I watched it but I'm sorry why is this guy more important than anyone else? Particularly the entire plane full of passengers the united crew was attempting to get their crew to? They handled it badly but it's in the contract and he refused. I guarantee there is more to this story.

like

Yea you can't be trespassing when you have a paid ticket. Do you guys even think through before typing/saying?

I fly 100-200 times a year. So when I am asked to deplane, I do it. I've had broken seats, plane weight issues, and been bumped. I expect credits or points but I am not going to refuse instructions or act like a toddler and hold up the plane. I am not going to act like an entitled brat when there isn't a seat or my bag has to be checked because overhead space ran out. This is part of flying as is inept airlines and poor customer service.

like

So actually the contract doesn't cover what happened. It has a section for oversold flights, where people can be bumped while they are still at the gate. In this man's case, he had already boarded. Their section for REMOVING passengers also does not apply to this man's case as he was not a nuisance or danger to anyone. The fact that United bumped these people and only offered $800 just so they could seat their own standby employees is appalling. Someone was on a power trip and made the wrong call.

like

Is it just you? No, there is pretty widespread outrage from anyone who has scene the video.

like

PC1 - It is interesting that your only logic is that "there is a rule". Sure there is, as are many more rules included in all contracts that companies have with their customers. Rules don't supercede civility and respect for any individual
