Is ratchet codeword for too many black people acting out?

Sorry about that OP.
i think you could’ve also just gotten older abs outgrew U
Good point, but I feel like even when I was younger I had limits
DC hasn't been the same since covid. I miss Marvin's 😒
🥲
I loved U Street so much that Saint Ex was my go-to. My bartenders are gone and I rarely drink anymore, but I miss 2017-20 U Street. Even Black Cat looks weird.
I agree with CS1 on the glory days. Pre-closure of U St music hall too
Pro
If you feel uncomfortable on U street, you probably shouldn't live in a city to begin with
I'm in Arlington, thanks
Chief
Covid did a number on it, but idk what you mean by “ratchet and packed”
Like it's really rowdy and there's so many people on the street just drunk and not really doing anything
Rising Star
Par of the course, in my view. Main reason why U St is so unique is because all walks of life congregate there (similar for 18th St but younger). Even in places like NYC with tons of people and diversity, their nightlife is pretty segregated compared to DC (maybe other cities aren’t, correct me if I’m wrong because I’m getting old and crotchety).
But maybe more ATVs and dirt bikes these days…
Diversity is one thing but it's getting kind of out of control with the young ones nowadays
It’s just not where people go to hang out any more. It’s very ratchet
No one cool
Until 2 months ago I lived on T street (~5 years) which is right against the U street corridor. I feel like it’s a mix of factors. Businesses closing, crime/panhandling/anti-social behavior, and competition from other areas of the city that are newer and more exciting (wharf, 14th street, etc) for the kids these days.
Arlington Forest. Outside of Ballston close to the Outback Steakhouse.
That’s why most new bars aren’t opening on u street. Sad they really let the neighborhood go down the tubes after all the investment and resurgence through the 2010s
Call it racist but it is what it is.
🤨
Can you give examples of ratchet behavior? I feel like it’s always been packed though. Not sure what it’s like post COVID, so things could be quite different.
Smh what the heck?? This ^^ this is what I mean
The city is congested for sure. The culture of U St. has changed.
Yup, the crowd type has definitely shifted over time. Less and less of the young professional crowd.
?
DC hasn’t been the same since [gentrification]…So there’s that.
So many good points in this convo!
