Anyone here “overemployed”?
I am a Principal Solutions Architect with 13 YOE of which 5 years exp is with Biotech focusing on Public Cloud (AWS) & overall AWS exp. 9 years. I need suggestions /opinions if applying for a Senior Solutions Architect (Level6) at AWS makes sense or if I should aim for a Principal SA (level 7) role at AWS with Healthcare & Lifesciences industry experience. If it makes any difference, I worked for AWS ProServe as an external SA in the past. Any insights / feedback appreciated.

Yes, no one in the history of mankind has done it because of the shame
Only by tall people. Short people look up to it 😜
It's more of an issue with how often you choose to do so, than if you've done it at all. It's important to move around, find what you like, get that lateral-move raise, etc. But if I as a recruiter see you've spent the last three years at three different consulting firms, I'm going to be hesitant to hire and invest in you unless you're bringing something big to the table.
Don't be afraid to move around, but sometimes what you're looking for is offered at your own firm, and maybe you just don't know about it yet.
I moved firms 4 times in two years with no negative consequences. It helps if you have a high demand skill set though.
Thank you for your responses! After almost a decade at one, I moved to another... 6 months in and I am starting to see the end of the road for me here. Definitely considering all of my options!
SC1 is 100% correct. im not a recruiter but look at resumes and do tech interviews. If I see a resume in which someone moves around once a year, I throw the resume away.
I echo some of the comments above. Moving once or twice in a decade it’s not unusual, or perhaps a little more if there’s a big reason (geography, disruptive tech etc). Moving every 18 months or so does play against you.
I myself stayed 17 years with one big consulting before deciding it was time for a new adventure with a smaller, faster growth one
As long as your pockets are looking up 🤷🏾♂️
I'm 24 and tbh the longest I've worked for a company is 14 months, which was my first job out of college. I don't think I would jump again for at least 2-3 years because I'm planning on going for an MBA, but man I can't imagine working at the same place for even 5 years, let alone 10. Not knocking it at all, but my impression is that you might get stale unless you're sustaining rockstar performance over a decade.
This is probably different if you're already pretty senior in your career, but as a young guy with obviously much less world/career experience than you guys, from what I've seen there's tremendous opportunity and potential to being a rockstar and making a move every 12-18 months. I've only done this once between my first and second job out of college, but I got an 80% raise and a title increase.
If I got into a great business school and was able to/still wanted to work for MBB, I could see myself staying 5+ years if I did really well and was progressing quickly, but my impression is that high performers get diminishing returns on their performance, and you have to accomplish more to get less as you climb in a single firm.
I moved around yearly since college (now 4 firms). Will always have a spot at each of the firms I've left. Moving around often has grown my career significantly more due to the exposure to different clients/ projects/ people that I definitely wouldn't have had if I stayed in one place. Not to mention the pay bumps can be much better than your yearly merit increase if you're not up for a promotion (I'm in NYC, now illegal to ask about historical pay, which makes that even better).
I moved around the last three years. Have a story to tell and it won’t go against you
