Is it me or have we broadened “diversity” so much that it allows the industry to conveniently leave out the black/hispanic?

"We" didn't broaden it too much. It was the old white guys saying a caucasian women's hire is diverse enough. It's up to us to keep pushing for more inclusion of POC of all genders.

I understood what you meant. I didnt realize I came off so strong. We're both on the same page. So now I guess it's up to us to keep pushing the conversation and trying to get diversity in race, sexuality, gender, culture, etc. wherever we are.

Our black (maybe mixed?) worldwide CEO said that diversity is more than race. So it seems some (read: most) agencies are over the d&i discussion.

True. It's not like the agencies ever really believed it. Fun fact: I had to cross an Al Sharpton protest line my second day in this industry...21 years ago. This industry still has a long way to go.

Frankly diversity has been whitewashed, and has become synonymous with advancing women in leadership. And to read between the lines it’s simply history repeating itself — as this solely means white women.

This is a thing everywhere, not just advertising. You have to remember that the starting point was non-discrimination against protected classes. Then the focus was on this idea of diversity neutral — color/gender/age blind meritocracies. Meanwhile The concept of diversity was introduced and intended to be inclusive but still address individual identities. Which didn’t/doesn’t happen due to race...as white gay men came out and the women advanced due to their privilege and proximity to white men, they were able to put resources and attention there. Add the idea of diversity of thought that gets thrown about to skirt race — it was intended to focus on identity- and culturally-based diversity to get to the cognitive diversity, but that was conveniently and wrongly dropped in favor of expertise and experience. BTW, These days most people responsible for diversity in corporate America are white women btw (or POC buried in HR under white women or men)...and race is being side-stepped as a third rail people are uncomfortable. Same thing happening outside in society is happening inside companies.

Diversity Pattern I keep noticing: pitch decks/campaigns. Half of the photos are of white people.. and the other half are black. No indian, hispanic, muslim & asian representation. It feels incredibly unbalanced. 🧐

Alright so fine there were not many diversity initiatives in the past and not a huge push to create more diversity in organizations. But now is the time you can change that. Moving forward you can put these these initiatives in place.

We always talk about diversity as being important, which it is, but if you don’t have diversity of thought what’s the point. We’re selling products to the masses not our very small advertising bubble.

Hi all, I’m one of the two BIPOC at an ad agency and I’m one of the first WOC ever hired at the agency. We’ve recently started to have diversity and inclusion trainings, and some of those trainings have been emotionally draining for me. What are the drawbacks of filing a second I485? For context I’m ROW and filed an EB I485 in May last year (Texas service center so still waiting). I am now eligible to file I485 under the diversity lottery program, that would be faster and no need to stay with my employer after GC

I recently got married and started talking to my sister in law more often. She addresses me as “Bro” EVERY SINGLE TIME. She knows I identify as female. I absolutely hate because it’s a sign of deeply ingrained patriarchy and I also find it disrespectful. I never address anyone as bro, dude, man etc because I honestly find it very disrespectful. I would rather be addressed by my name. How can I handle this situation? We are still forming a reltnship & don’t want to hurt that process. I’m Indian.

A CRO offerred me an internal consulting/biz dev role. They offered 145k TC (20% bump) and slightly better benefits. They also offered accelerated path (6mo to 1yr) to MC. While promotion to MC at my current company is at least 1 year away. The job is interesting to me and fits my careery goal.
