Is it more likely to make it to principal/partner at Oliver Wyman, Big 4 or others than at MBB? Or is percentage of those that make it roughly equal across the board?

Deloitte’s trend is to make less Principals but more Managing Directors, with a potential path from MD to P. People still make P directly from SM, just not in as many numbers as previously. I believe this is partially because we are trending towards doing more acquisitions for growth.

I don’t have a frame of reference to compare to other firms. No matter where you are though, being qualified and “ready” to be a Principal, along with having the necessary network support, is going to be a much bigger factor. If you are qualified on every aspect they look for (no small task), have good network support, and have demonstrated that you would make the pie bigger than the slice you would be taking, most firms would want you to be a Principal.

I think Big 4 are more likely to park people at Senior Manager for a long time. At our firm you’re out-counseled typically if you don’t advance within a certain timeframe. Not sure on the direct answer to your question.

We don’t strictly enforce Up or Out, so I would assume the chances here are higher. The actual proportion that choose to pursue it is a different question.

How soon is too soon to switch jobs? I went in-house a year ago, after five years as a MidLaw litigator. I always aim to stay at a job for at least two years, and not to move until it’s necessary; I also wanted to stay in this job for awhile as I’m still learning how to be in-house and have lots to grow. But the culture is poor and pay is average. Does it look bad to leave after 1/1.5 years? Is the stink of such a departure significantly lessened at the two year mark? Thanks in advance!

I have three years of experience in agency recruiting and HR. I’m currently making 47k as an HR Coordinator. I’m starting to feel bitter that I took a pay cut to transition to HR from agency recruiting so I put myself open to recruiters on LinkedIn and got a Sr Recruiter contract offer with a company that I’m familiar with for $38/hour. I don’t love the company’s culture so I’m going to keep looking but would it be worth leveraging the offer with my current org? I’ve only been there for 7 months

Has anyone taken part of the education reimbursement program? I’m already wearing multiple hats when it comes to work. Does anyone have insight on how it works/what it’s like? Thanks in advance!

$1.5M client and new “profitability tool” showing %0 profit. Credit split 50/50 btw 20 year attorney/equity partner (JEP) and a much more senior/connected EP (SEP). Both SEP and JEP developed separate workstreams unrelated to the other. SEP‘s was terminated 3 years ago and only accounts for $200K trail off of the $1.5M. SEP’s salary is 3 times JEP’s. Profitability tool “costs” are not transparent, suspect SEP’s high salary is a factor. Anything (other than typical overhead) to ask about?
