Is it normal for a company to ask for references? I have finished the final round of interviews, and now they are asking for them. I don’t want my current team to know I’m applying, so not sure how to handle it.

Just did this - find friends at your firm and a manager you’re comfortable with. Cover your ass and don’t pick ppl who don’t like you lol

like

Not sure why are they asking for ref?

Yes it’s standard. Provide managers from previous jobs

Tell them just that, you don’t want your current team to know that you’re applying externally and then try to collaborate to come up with some solution.

Yup just got it after accepting my role at. PE shop then they asked for references

Just provide references from anywhere but your current company

Ask folks you have worked for, know you professionally and are not at BCG anymore.

Thanks all, will ask my fav managers for discretion

Applying to industry after 2 yrs in a data-heavy strategy consulting role, and running into an odd problem: people are automatically putting me into a "heavy-quant" box and becoming apprehensive of my fit for a business role (strategy, FP&A, etc). 2 Qs: 1. Does this sound plausible, or am I overthinking based on a small sample? 2. How would you highlight your fit/interest in moderately quantitative roles? Received an offer from a smaller consulting firm helping build out a new practice with the same work I am doing now. It is a $20k pay raise however I do really enjoy who I work with and really have no reason to leave besides money. I’m afraid to switch and not like it and be miserable but it is an offer that’s very hard to say no too and everyone I interviewed with was great and came from other big 4’s. I’m still very early on in my career.. two years out of college. Any thoughts and opinions?

Looking for advice. I’m currently interviewing for a position that pays $20k more than I make now. It seems like the job would not be giving me much for my portfolio and may have some work/life balance issues (but tbh what agency doesn’t). I’ve got piles of student loan debt. I’m only in year 2 of my career. Do I take this job for a year, deal with the downsides, pay off a huge chunk of my debt, then get back to fun stuff? Or will it hurt my career to have a portfolio gap?

Currently interviewing for a designer role at Tesla - wanted some advice. The hiring manager has seemed uninterested and always dropped off interviews early and without answering any of my questions. He also mentioned that he's lost 4 designers from the team recently (red flag!). I think it'd be a cool role, but it sounds like I'd be the only designer and there's not a ton of support, BUT if I do well - lots of room for growth and promotion. Plus internal transfers after a year also an option?

I’m interviewing for a role that is open to both remote and in-office (when it’s safe) work. Should I give salary expectations based on cost of living in the city where the office is located or based on where I’d live working remotely? Cost of living in the office location is a lot higher than where I’d live but since they are also considering in-person candidates, I know the budget is there.

I’m in my mid-40s with a 7 year old and baby. Is it too late for me to back into public accounting? I was laid off last year and found a great job in a large bank. I miss the flexibility, challenge and rigor of PA. I would love your opinions. Has the ship sailed for me in PA? If I go back I would be an experienced senior; maybe, a year or so from manager.

I have always dreamt of living abroad. A few years in Europe, and then APAC. Transfer plans fell through with covid, and I’m pretty sure they will be delayed due to Delta. Turning 25 this month and feel like that dream is getting farther away.
