Is it normal for a start-up to be super vague and keep setting up meetings to get to know you but gives you bare minimum details about them?

I had a start-up reach out to me and after a few meetings I have barely been able to get any information about them. I don't know name, size, or anything but a vague description about what they offer (don't even know what role they would want me in). Is this normal or am I right to be annoyed?

I don't think this is normal. One of the ways startups get people to work for them for what is usually below-market pay is equity and belief in the company's future. That kinda requires knowing what the company is doing...

Usually secrecy is seen as a negative sign in startup circles, that the founders are inexperienced / narcissistic. The best founders tend to be very eager to share their vision, because they know that it's about execution, not the idea, and they are confident that they are the right people to execute the idea.

Source: I'm a startup and venture capital attorney, former startup founder, and generally fairly plugged in to the startup world.

Agreed here. Too much for too little makes no sense in either direction.

It’s probably a sneaky way for them to get a consultants recommendation for free. Steer clear.

Hmm I'm a tech consultant too and from the looks of it I'm nowhere near the end of this process. I was genuinely interested and I get tons of reach outs I ignore.

I'm just annoyed at how vague and slightly sneaky this all feels.

I’ve had a few like this. I’d say it’s typical, but I’ve never had anything come to fruition and found it to be a waste of time. Since you’re in a position where you don’t need it, you might be able to just be forward about what you need from them before you proceed further.

This might be a lot at once - depending on the size of it. But if you’re doing that much upfront - you might want to ask if the rigor is going to be like that when you get to the company.

Very strange and atypical for a promising (culturally functional) startup. I’d offer to sign an NDA (assuming you haven’t already) and tell them you need to know more about the company before you sink that amount of personal time in.

If a startup tried to do that to me I’d be wigged out and walk away.

Had a few approach me like this, shut it down and walk away before wasting more time.

Now they also want me to read a bunch of things and see how I can discuss the topics (its at least 3-5hrs of reading). And I'm at the point of I really don't need this job and I'm not even sure if I want enough to be doing all this extra work. (I already have a good paying full-time job this would just be part-time)

Is it possible to get a referral to Uber please? I know the exact positions for which I’m applying to.

When I ask my manager for advice about how to do something, he usually just tells me I'll "figure it out yourself." But when it comes down to it, he doesn't help me at all by doing that—he just makes me feel like an idiot. And then when I do figure it out myself and bring the answer back to him, he won't even look at it! He'll just say something like "Oh yeah, thank you," and give me another assignment.

Hi all - not COVID-19 related however what is the best way to strategically ask for a raise/more benefits at your first job when 1) it hasn’t been over a year but you’ve been getting really good feedback that the work you’re doing is great and 2) there’s another role available that’s offering a higher salary that you are more than qualified to take on. My boss seems to not budge and continues to give me the “there’s nothing we can do on our end due to budget xyz etc”

Additional Posts in Startups and Entrepreneurship

I have an idea for a cloud-based analytics product. It’s closely aligned to my (consulting) day job so I have a good sense of the market and have received +ve feedback on it. I know conceptually how the mechanics works. But, I have no programming experience and I’m not in the start-up world so have nonexistent relationships. I have no capital too. Just an idea.

How do I go about finding a programming co-founder? I don’t want to just outsource it. I want someone to build this product with me.
