Is it normal for people to take a gap year or 6 months to travel in between your first consulting job and your exit opportunity? I’m worried that I’ll never really have time to travel or backpack like I always wanted to without sacrificing my career. Just wondering if anyone has advice or experience with traveling while still advancing their career?

Everything is normal if you can tell a compelling story around it. Find a narrative that makes sense. Tell the story to your new future employer. If you need to embellish, do so cautiously. Don't lie, but make the break make sense

like

Does it matter if it’s normal? If it’s something you want to do and you can afford it, do it!

I want to!! Just wondering if you lose marketability if there’s a 1 year gap in your resume. I’m very worried about coming back and not being able to find a job again afterwards :/ From what I’ve heard most people already have an exit opportunity secured before leaving

like

Not normal but you should do it. You don’t lose marketability if you have a good explanation for resume gaps. If anything, it’s an interesting icebreaker.

100% do it

Really thinking I want to do this too. I just feel like I need complete separation from work to disconnect and think about what I truly want to do after this chapter. I sometimes feel we are so caught up in the day to day shuffle that we don’t have true deep moments of reflection, as we are just trying to keep our heads above water. Clear and strategic decisions can’t be made in that frame of mind.

Same question. Definitely looking to spend some time not working between this job and the Next Thing

I don’t think this will reflect poorly on you in any way and sounds like you will regret not doing it! Don’t see why we can’t do this between any jobs though, for example between third and fourth - this past year has taught me to challenge traditional career notions

You will not regret it. You will find another job

I have an athletic apparel company and am always trying to find ambassadors, adventurers, bloggers, etc. to spread the word. Would be a great part time job if you want to fill the gap with a few hours of work every week. DM if interested.

Do it, my friend took a 4 month sabbatical through EY came back and left 3 months later. Never showed as unemployment, he just wasn’t paid during the time off

Lol go for it. The corny saying is it's not about the destination but the journey is pretty true. The reality is your career can wait a little bit plus 6 months is not a long time compared to 40 years. Also personally I think maturity shows in interviews and life experience helps a lot. Feel free to DM me. I am happy to try to convince you to do this. Just message me here first because I won't see it.

Met with a CCO for a role on a notoriously “challenging” account. Thirty minute Zoom, nothing in-depth. A few days later the recruiter emails like “Great news.
