I've seen it happen a lot of times, it's just a PR/publicity thing to drum up interest - but it just ends up putting internal stuff into a lot of pressure so not sure if it's worth it
It really sucks because if launch doesn't go to plan, product teams end up taking the heat :( honestly, I would have it documented somewhere in writing where you acknowledge the pressure/timelines etc so you have something to fall back on - just in case!! Or launch might go super amazing and you won't even need it
It’s possible to sell a product before MVP so why not
It is sometimes done to get a head start on gathering feedback on the MVP
If you got a wireframe, it can be sold. Use your imagination 😅 but seriously best of luck and manage expectations. remember selling dreams is included in our job description
Thanks PM1. Trying!
You better be ready to deliver then. C1 is right, it puts a lot of pressure on, but also if you have some kind of black swan issue, you're screwed public image wise.
What I’m worried about
Possibly if you are trying to test for interest and to see what works, kind of like early A/B testing.
This used to be standard practice in the AdTech space. Announce a feature first, wait for a buyer, then build it after the contract is signed. Most sales decks were PPT-based because nothing was demonstrable. It gave adtech a bad wrap for awhile, and a lot of companies never really had any unique technology. But it worked for a long time.
You may want to find out who pushed the announcement to go live before the product was ready, and perhaps talk to them to understand if this is what you should expect moving forward. If the answer is yes, you may want to consider if that’s the world you want to live in.
tl,dr: happens all the time. But that doesn’t make it right or healthy….
