Is it normal to take time off during your notice period? Especially if it was something you already have approval for before you resigned?

It depends, on your relationship with your boss and coworkers. If you all are good, probably not a good idea to take lots of days off. However, life goes on even after you put in your notice-your new job may not give you that much time before you begin. If you have vacation time and they won’t pay you for what’s left, it’s still yours to use. But especially if your boss is a lying piece of garbage, that absolutely has no clue what the hell they are doing in their position-they get what they give. You are definitely not obligated to be nice to people if they treat you like garbage. No one would think twice about etiquette if they had to fire you. At-will goes both ways, they can fire you at any time for any thing and you can fire them. You do what you need to do for you.

Reality check (for people in the US): Just because you gave the agency notice, they have no obligation to accept your end date. For example, if you say that you will be leaving at the end of July, but are taking the last week of June as PTO, they can simply reply, “Thanks for the notice. But we won’t need such a long transition period. Let’s make June 18th your last day. We’ll pay you through then, plus your earned but unused PTO time. Good luck!”. They will owe you nothing beyond that. You are the one who terminated the relationship.

If you earned your PTO and already have it approved then take it. The company would let you go without batting an eye and replace you without a second thought. Take care of you and take care of your teammates. It’s not that hard to hand things off to folks. And if they don’t have the support they need to take on that work that’s on the company, not you.

like

And to add to this, as an SPM who’s primary responsibility is literally the team and their workload, I tell this to every single team member I work with and stand by it 10 times out of 10. If you can’t handle it as a company then someone somewhere is doing their job wrong.

like

The point of the notice period is so you can be there to help them transition. If you already know you’ll be gone for part of it, give a longer notice period to cover it.

like

(Sorry, didn’t mean to be so condescending there. Just saying it’s the considerate thing to do for your team, but not required.)

like

As a manager it would definitely piss me off a little if I were busy but whatever. Life comes first

like

D3 no. Which is why I didn’t say those things. If someone I work with is mature enough to have responsibility like that, I know they’re mature enough to handle their exit situation properly. If they aren’t mature enough they likely don’t have those responsibilities anyway and I couldn’t care less. Weird how when you treat people like adults they act like it. On the odd chance I’m wrong, i have the support and knowledge i need to make that transition easy for my colleagues. Pretty straightforward stuff for any PM worth their salt.

Don’t make a company guilt you into not using your PTO because you are choosing to move onto another job. TAKE IT! I cannot reiterate this enough. There is a reason you are leaving, and you have EARNED the PTO. Especially if you are not paid out or if it is an unlimited policy, who cares?

like

I just did this before I switched jobs…it was planned PTO, and I took it, but I gave 3.5 weeks notice to compensate.

like

Your PTO is a part of your compensation. Not taking it, especially if it was already planned, is leaving part of your due compensation behind. If it was already planned, then you already have a coverage plan for that time anyway. Work will never love you back, but don't be a d*** to your coworkers.

What do you do if you get an offer less than 2 weeks before start date? I've never had a new job give me more than 2 weeks notice, yet everyone's always surprised when I don't take time off in between

like

Push the start date. No place should give you a hard tile about pushing a start date from 2 weeks to 4. and if they do, it’s a huge 🚩 of things to come.

like

Depends on how long your notice period is. If it’s 2-weeks it might be a bit tacky but the company wouldn’t care if it was the other way around. If it’s 2-months (not common in NA, but standard in EU) you’re harming absolutely no one.

like

That is exactly what I meant, but I’m also in a post-AZ daze so won’t make perfect sense for another day or so 🤪

like

A couple days, yes. A week, might offer to tack on a few extra days notice.

like

Some companies have rules against taking time off during your notice period, so be prepared for them telling you to cancel.

What would they do if you don’t cancel your planned PTO though? Genuinely curious, not trying to be sassy.

If you're UK based, yes it is normal.

It’s 1 month for most I think. I went to 3 months after 5 years working

like

How long is the time off and how close is it the end of your time with with the company? If it’s a day or two in the middle, that’s fine. People will raise eyebrows but it’s not going to be a big deal. If it’s for a long period or at the end of your time there, the company could push up your end date to be before you go on PTO

If it was already scheduled then it's OK. Like it's not ideal but it also doesn't look bad. Just a 'shit happens' event.

If you have something to do take it. Are they paying you for any unused pto…?

If you already had that PTO approved, take it. However, as someone else noted, the point of a notice period is to wrap things up and help transition. If you don’t want to burn bridges you’ll make sure you still give about 2 weeks of actual work days (in the US) before you depart.

I don’t see many transitions at the analyst/associate level from one consulting firm to another unless it’s to or from Big 4. Does anybody know why that is? Is it frowned upon to do this at such an early level?
