Ask HR if you are allowed (just speculating that you may not be a fully active employee) but if it is important to you, go ahead. It is you life / career / family so only you can decide. The only * here is that if you are in senior leadership I would be very cautious in how you talk to PLs or Cs about it. You don’t want to set the tone / unintentional pressure that certain work events are more important than taking full parental leave.
Pro
They usually will not allow it. It can violate FMLA laws.
I actually think there are some rules about this because you’re on official leave you are not allowed to do any “work”, so check with HR. At Deloitte you can return from maternity leave, go to the training for a few days, then go back out on leave.
Speaking from was i was in HR - definitely not allowed while on a LOA as a “non-active employee”. You shouldnt be emailing either - unless it’s to respond to HR or a leave coordinator.

Probably ok but I wouldn’t bother. Nothing is that “key”.

I didn’t attend any trainings, but I went to a couple lunches because I wanted to. They were more social/networking.
I should clarify that it is a huge deal to get out of the house, I don’t have regular childcare, am still exclusively breastfeeding, etc. But I could carve out an hour or two to maintain relationships here and there, and there are 2-3 things I’d genuinely like to participate in for that purpose. I can’t decide if that’s admirable or a faux pas.
I guess there’s the argument/fear that it sets expectations for participation but I don’t feel any pressure to do anything other than join the small number of things that I don’t want to miss, less than 5 hours total.
