Is it possible to go back to a firm after working in house? For context, I worked 2 years in biglaw (corporate) and just made the switch earlier this year to an in house role (doing mostly securities/general corporate work). Could I go back to a firm after 2 years in house?

I know someone who did this. Did 2 years in house (corp practice) in their 4th and 5th years, then went back to their V10. Not only did they welcome him back but he's up for partner on schedule. Seems like a good deal.

Agree and disagree. “Totally doable” seems to me like too strong of a statement. Not every former biglaw associate who goes in-house will be able to do this. A major factor is how busy the firms are at the time the person is seeking to make this transition. When business is booming and firms are desperately looking for people they can put on deals, I agree that it is “totally doable”. When that is not the situation, things like the number of years the person spent in biglaw before they left and what they have been doing since will have a bigger impact.

You *might* be able to return to biglaw, but I think it will largely depend on the state of the economy (i.e., how busy firms are) at that time. Given that you only had 2 years of biglaw experience when you left, you will probably have a harder time. Your best bet will likely be at the firm you left, assuming you left on good terms.

I had 3 years of amlaw200 experience and went in house at a tech company last year. I just accepted a v30 offer but I am taking a class cut. It can happen. It depends on the market and what area you want to get back into.

like

I went back. 3 yrs in biglaw, three in house. Back in biglaw.

It really depends on the market and whether firms are desperate for bodies. Having only 2 years of biglaw experience before moving in house will make it harder, as someone else mentioned. Occasionally I’ve seen in house go back to a firm that they use or have a close relationship with (though they often don’t stay there very long, it’s kind of used as a stepping stone).

like

Why would you want to move back to the Big Law life? Grass is always greener mentality? 🤔

It’s totally doable.

like

If you already start thinking about go back, why move in house?

I've seen a few folks go back to firms after in-house. I think firms are pretty desperate for associates these days, so I don't think getting off the track for a few years is as big of a deal as it once was.

Hoping for some advice here!!

I’m a senior sales person that just left my first job (where I was ranked top 10% in sales, worked for 5 years, qualified for presidents club 3 times & was very well known & respected) for a new company that will definitely be better, but I am starting over. Also, working from home for the first time (last job deemed “essential”).

What are some things you all have done to stay motivated during the climb of starting over? Also when learning to work from home?

I recently joined the team as corporate counsel. I only have two years of prior firm experience in a non related area.
What should I do? I’ve been brought up to speed on all ongoing matters, but feeling like I won’t be able to handle being the sole legal counsel. Should I push for someone to be hired at GC and I stay at my level, or shoot for the GC role? Would I even be qualified?

Since moving in house from PP I’ve been astounded at how often business folks want to set up a zoom call to walk through contracts and rewrite language on the fly. Not only is it terribly inefficient, it leaves virtually no time to actually think through things, especially when dealing with long, complicated contracts for things like software purchases. Just wondering if anyone has any good tips for how to politely point out to people how bad of a process that is, assuming others face the same?

Thoughts on comp from those in the know? Considering an offer to join a mid sized asset manager, $30bn AUM as a funds / PE transactional associate. Im an 8th year at a v5 (10 years out of law school). Total comp = $450 (300k base, rest bonus). Hours per week likely 50-60 (working way more now). They offer great 401k matching but they don't increase the base (or even likely the bonus) every year. Is this a decent package? Should I hold out? I am the breadwinner and have 3 little ones, for context
