Very dependent on your target firms and your ability to build a book of business (and put together an attractive and convincing business plan). It’s a challenge but definitely can be done.
It’s easier to lateral as a mid-level associate, but I do know some counsel that have done it as well. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to look. It will depend on what the other firm’s needs are; generally if they are bringing in someone that senior as a lateral, they are looking to grow a practice area.

Most places give a 2 year look. But there can be "damaged goods" stank....
