It can happen of course. But most serious places aren’t going to rescind an offer unless you behave unprofessionally. Most of the time they’ll just say they can’t do any better.

A former colleague went through negotiations with D, where they ended up rescinding the offer through email.

Two ways it happens: 1) You overshoot the range by so much the recruiter doesn’t think further discussion is salvageable. Psychologically they want you to be excited about the offer, in a state of anticipation. It doesn’t matter if you’re willing to take much less - studies have shown that accepting an offer much lower than the initial ask is internalized by candidates as a significant loss, which in turn tends to end up poisoning performance. 2) You treat salary negotiations like you’re haggling on a used car lot. Unless it’s a C-level position with equity, vesting, etc, you should not be going back and forth on comp multiple times. If that happens, it sends the message that you’re difficult to deal with, and some recruiters will cut bait.

Yes

Absolutely. If you counter, you’ve rejected their offer. Only if they accept your counter does the offer still stand

A recruiter shared a salary band of 110-120 during an initial phone screen and I said it’s within expectation but didn’t commit to a number. However, if I get an offer, is it possible to negotiate after hearing the responsibilities of the position? I’d ideally like 125-135, but haven’t negotiated before. Appreciate any tips!

Hey! Can anyone assist with what can be claimed as workers comp? I was at work when I had my first episode of vertigo. Everything was spinning, wouldn't stop, and I couldn't stand or sit. I was freaking out and asked to be rushed to ER. Work paid for the ambulance. No physical injury. Insurance apparently didn't cover emergency charges. The out of pocket expense is about $2.5k and was wondering if I can claim this as workers comp. Again, no physical injury though.

Evaluating an offer from a series a startup - base is $160k and equity is about half of that or .15% of the company today. It’s a huge step down for me in total comp (~65k less than what I make today) but I think company has a good chance of success. How can I negotiate more equity?

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power. I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about. However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?
