Is it possible to move from mid-law to big law? Currently doing civil litigation but trying to lateral. In an ideal world would love to do corporate, but would also take litigation. In San Diego for reference.

Anything is possible sweet pea, you won’t know until you try!!! I believe in you. (This is not meant to sound sarcastic at all, more of a Cheryl Strayed tone!)

It is possible to move to big law from mid-law, and it is possible to switch to corporate from litigation, but probably not both at the same time. You can switch firms first, and then after you prove yourself at your new firm, you can begin looking for ways to transition your practice area.

Yes and yes but probably not in one shot. Big law is hiring big time right now so you could likely lateral (assuming qualifications and reputation are solid) in litigation to a big law firm. Alternatively, see what corporate opportunities are out there (big or small firm) and find a firm willing to train you. I switched from big law litigation to real estate a few years ago and had to find a small firm willing to train me. I lost a few years in class standing which was fine by me. Stuck it out there for a bit and then went to a larger firm. Not big law but ideal size for my career goals. Now that I’m established in my new practice area I have recruiters reaching out all the time with big law opportunities. Hope this is helpful.

I’m at an SD big firm doing corporate. What year are you? My firm is looking for class of 2019 and up! Happy to answer questions if you send a Dm :)

like

Ahh should have added that I am a first-year :/

Yeah! I service SoCal and this is the market to go for it. Dm me if you want any help, you might have to target OC firms that are open to hybrid or remote as well since SD doenst have a ton of big law firms.

Yeah biggest challenge here seems to be the very small San Diego legal market. Have had a few friends try to move down and end up remote working for other California firms. Obviously easier if you have contacts at the places where you want to work.

Yes, it’s absolutely possible. Ask around your connections you made during your litigation practice and/or volunteering.

What would you do? Have a flight to JFK and there’s a J train that takes me straight to the air train to the terminal (cost would be $10.50) or take an Uber to JFK (cost would be like $72.60). I’m a woman and would need to leave around 9AM. Tbh I feel unsafe riding the subway for so long but maybe a weekday at 9AM won’t be so bad? Have been wfh so haven’t been using the subway. Have anxiety reading the news with crazies on subway tho.
