Is it really worth it to get your Masters degree! Or is the extra increase in salary just going to go to student loans?

To echo the others, if you are going to be in education for a while it will definitely pay for itself and then some. Our retirement is based on our highest years of salary so even if the raise goes to pay back loans for a few years, you will see the benefits afterwards and into retirement. And it can be a great to experience the student perspective and continue to learn and grow as a teacher.

If you’re planning on staying in education for awhile definitely get your Masters. Do it sooner rather than later. Once you’ve been out of school for awhile it’s hard to go back. With a Masters, you will make more money over the years while teaching and during retirement.

Definitely go for it! Depending on your contract, you can make a small jump in pay once you’re about halfway finished with your masters and a big jump once you complete it. It amazes me that some teachers are so reluctant to go on for their masters because the tuition initially comes out of their pocket, but it makes SUCH a huge difference in your pay over the years. It also significantly increases your payout at retirement. It is also beneficial for you to continue learning more about your profession, how to improve your practices, and how to help students be more successful.

I never wanted to be an administrator and didn’t like the programs through my local universities. After 20 years in, I did mine through Walden online. It was great, I should have done it sooner.

Me too! I just finished in August. I’ve been teaching for 20 years.

Yes. Just pick a program with the lowest per credit hour cost and you will reap the greatest monetary benefit.

if it were me, I'd do a few classes a year and have your school pay for it or do a masters equivalent

like

Michigan requires but refuses to pay for a masters.

I have so much student loan debt, I can't really see any benefit. I feel like I have 15 more years to go down a dead end street. The way education is and the kids, I definitely would not pick this career if I had to do it over again. ☹

Public school has declined over the years, I agree.

Yes, get your masters. I do not know about Texas, but in California, most districts give extra pay or annual stipends for a masters degree. The extra credits move you to the top step on the salary scale, so your pay is a lot higher and you continue to get yearly step increase; with out the masters, you stop getting increases after 10 years (our district) and most importantly, the higher salary will increase your retirement pension, which you will get for 20 or more years! I am retiring this year, my position on the salary scale, do to my masters degree, has made a difference of $400 a month for the rest of my life!

If you plan on staying 30 plus yes

A masters degree is required to renew your certification the first time in Michigan, no masters = no job.

My son is in a program that he pays less the sooner that he gets it done. He is working on finishing it in 6 months.

It’s required in Massachusetts.

And in New York and Las Vegas

Hi all, I am in discussion with TCS for salary negotiation. They are offering less CTC than the offer in hand. They are waiting for my confirmation to release the offer. Now, I am thinking to ask them to provide me onsite assurance(not now but at least in 6-12months), so as to compensate for the ctc difference. I know that account has onsite opportunities at my band. Is it a wise thing to ask the manager to give me onsite assurance in written so as to compensate for the CTC ?

Received an offer from McKinsey & Company and am super stoked to join, but I’m getting quite criticized in my personal life for the decision mostly because of the public image of the firm.
