Is it reasonable to be expected to spend 20-30 non-billable hours a month checking your paralegal’s work? (i.e. summarizing hundreds of records and bills). The partner said he “didn’t use paralegals” at his previous firm and eating the time is an “investment in yourself.” Is this common?

Does not sound reasonable at all to me but I don’t use a paralegal, just my legal assistant. The philosophy my firm has is that the point of having support staff is to make the lives of the attorneys easier. What you’re describing doesn’t sound consistent with that.

like

It could be that this particular paralegal has had performance issues and the partner feels their work needs to be double-checked? I don’t know why they wouldn’t just fire the paralegal in that case, but I’ve seen it happen.

I’m in house now, but when I worked at a firm an attorney’s review of my work, whether it was my draft of a letter, contract, or tax return, was always billable time.

like

Agreed with A5. How do other associate/paralegal combos handle this? Is it possible for another paralegal to double check the math? The paralegal I work with now, we proofread for each other all the time.

Lol just realized there are two independent threads going

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.

I’m only a few weeks into the in-house world and I have to say that it kicks ass. I get to spend real time learning about how our business works without worrying about billable hours. I’m sure I’ll become more jaded as I go on (as lawyers do) but I want to take a moment to appreciate it.

I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

I just spoke with a software architect that went back to school to learn software engineering after law school because it was more lucrative and had less hours. He’s worked his way up and has the skills and authority to work 6:30am-10am and gets to work remotely. We discussed that results/outputs is better than billable time like in law and public accounting. Yet, his parents and others would view him as “lazy” but he does his job and makes a fantastic living. Time>Money and Results>Hours

During the interview they never mentioned there were billable req.
