Is it rude to suggest to a new analyst that she needs to look more professional, e.g. don’t show up with wet hair to client meetings (even if on Zoom)? FYI I’m also a female and just trying to look out for these new hires

Male here. Yes. As long as the client doesn’t care, why should you? Most clients are in sweatpants and roll out of bed right before meetings so no need to enforce strict dress codes on your colleagues. Of course if the client remarks about it, then it’s fine to remind them of reasonable client expectations of professionalism.

I think intention here is key. I would make it clear that YOU are not the one judging here, but you’ve had past experiences with former leadership (drop the name) or clients (drop the name) commenting on it before so future teams or clients might perceive it to be unprofessional, even if it is an outdated perception.

like

Intention doesn’t matter if the impact is still trash.

I don’t think this is an appropriate comment to make. As a woman with ethic/naturally curly hair, it often takes my hair up to half a day to dry, and I’d rather spend the time doing the work than drying my hair. Comments about wet hair are often specifically target to women who wear their hair naturally. If she’s not dressing professionally, that’s a different story. No one gives two shits if your hair is wet IMO.

like

Ditto to these comments, I have naturally curly hair as well and it takes at least 4-5 hours to dry. Diffusers/blow drying kills my hair and causes damage so I would have to wake up at like 3 am to even have a prayer of having fully dried hair everyday lol

like

Yes it’s rude. You should care about performance, not optics. I think you’re projecting your need or desire to look a certain way on someone who doesn’t feel the same

likefunny

If you set this expectation, you better make sure to you never show up with wet hair. I also think you need to ask yourself if this is a battle you want to pick—you don’t know what her home circumstances are like or (this might sound weird) her relationship with her hair. I recently stopped wearing make up on my client calls because it was causing me terrible breakouts. I would be mortified if my manager asked me to wear makeup.

like

Hard to tell because most men have short hair that dries in minutes. I would be curious if she would tell a long haired male analyst this though

like

No, not at all. Mention the client and your firms standards of dress code

like

I have never seen a dress code address wet hair.

like

I would appreciate the honest feedback as long as you’re not too rude about it...I would tell them

like

Male here. I seriously doubt any client would care at all, and if you’re a manager or teammate, you’re barking up the wrong tree. It simply does not matter. Literally nobody cares except you, and you’re just going to make her feel like she needs to walk on eggshells around you (at least that’s how I would feel),

like

She’s an analyst and new. So I’m sure she’ll understand the feedback if you put it nicely

likefunny

I’m a F. On my first project I had a male manager tell me I needed to stop touching my hair so much during meetings. At the time I was very 😒🤔🙄 about his comment, but now I realize how much I needed to be told. Our job is all about optics. People might not like it but it’s the reality. Id mention it to her, and just would be careful how i framed it. It is unprofessional and she probably just hasn’t fully grasped what’s acceptable this early in her career. People who are saying their clients don’t look nice on video calls, that’s no excuse. We are supposed to present ourselves as experts.

Consultant 3 you sound like you suck lol

like

Please mention to her immediately

like

Nah, rule of thumb: if someone can change it within 5 mins you always tell them.

like

Fair enough. I agree there is a middle ground here.

I don’t understand what so unprofessional about wet hair especially if you’re at your own house. Like, whoa sorry I got clean for my workday. (Not criticism against OP, just general frustration)

likefunny

My manager (F) used to roll in to the client site with wet hair 🤷🏻‍♀️ (granted we had a very casual tech client tho)

like

I'd mention it as a "hey for our client (or firm) these are the normal expectations" if I was having a private side conversation with her at some point. Or just let the managers deal with it cause I'm sure they'd say something if it was a real problem

like

Damn I’d turn up to the clients site with damp hair all the time. If that’s not distracting to anyone (the point of dress codes), idk why that’d be an issue.

like

No matter if it is a man or a woman, having wet hair during call meetings is none of anyone's business.

like

What’s wrong with wet hair?

like

I would appreciate that as a young professional. Honestly feedback is important. Just make sure to ask yourself - if SHE was older or a man, would I make that comment? But I think wet hair is unprofessional in general.

like

I’ve always hope a manger would tell me if my appearance is not professional enough - I generally err towards professional dress but my hair is not done (it’s dry and brushed or put back, but note “done”) and I don’t wear makeup (also curious on your opinion here)

My (white) manager consistently gives me feedback that I’m “very literal” when doing assignments. She asks for something, I do what her directions say, and she tells me “oh you took that very literally. You’re very literal.” Obviously consulting is subjective and we’ve all had managers give vague directions leading to multiple iterations of work, but at what point do I push back? I’ve also noticed her say this about several black colleagues including clients and the senior mgr on the project.

I'll be joining Microsoft's FRP next year, and I'm trying to establish a plan for my LT goals. From reading various threads, the consistency seems to be consulting->FAANG. I've heard that mobility into a Corp Strat role is feasible - just a matter of networking. Since I'll be starting at Microsoft and Strategy is something of interest, can anyone share their experiences if they have done this or know someone who has? Wondering what role an M7 MBA may lead to as well (considering). TIA!

Hi European 🐠 My company is currently looking for IT architects and tech consultants (any level). We’re a boutique with a amazing team culture and really very interesting projects, great learning opportunities (aka we don’t get hired to take over tasks no one wants to do, we get hired to make a difference) + above average comp. Relocation is not necessary, as long as you’re in CET time zone and live close to an airport. DM me for more information! Cheers

Did I screw myself by being the first person to bring up salary figures with a startup? I tried to hold firm and make sure they said ballpark range first before I said if those align with my expectations, but she gave a vague “it depends on market, but I can give you a broad range from $45k-$90k for the role.” So I responded with $70k-$80k. Should I have asked for the highest range then of $80k-$90k? Worst case scenario, I don’t want it being revoked.
