Not always, there are plenty tech jobs, or some middle management that can work reasonable hours and still make well over 200k.
I came from industry, my sr. Director worked 45 hours a week, max, they averaged 400 TC yearly
Was in technology, F50
Or, you could be just really good at your job. I average 42 hours a week
I average about the same. Not a big deal really... just be productive and delegate
How do you know they’re not working when they get home? Why are you so quick to judgment? Put your own house in order, loser
Defensive much?
"Work smart, not long" applies to lots of well paid individuals
My hubs works ~45 hours and pulls in over $1m and doesn’t really travel at all. It wasn’t always like that though. He had to put in a lot more work at the beginning of his career, but now the WLB and comp is amazing.
K3 you’re right. He didn’t have to take out a loan to buy it, they just structured it so that he got paid less the trailing 3-5 years after this guys retirement (so essentially the guy kept getting paid after he retired). It’s also risky because you don’t know if clients will stay. Thankfully, most have. We worry all the time about the future of the industry with all of the passive investing and robo platforms, but people do see the value in it, otherwise he wouldn’t have such a big book. Fingers crossed that it stays that way.
I left EY a year ago with 5 YOE for a technical sales job that pays 155+ commission which ends up being low 200s. I don’t have to bring in the clients, just show up and show them how our software solves a problem they have and collect my commish when they buy (6 months later... because...procurement) Travel maybe 10 days a month and generally 40 hour weeks with some exceptions when things get really busy for a week or 2 at a time. When I travel it’s just for meetings/public speaking and handle emails via phone, no pressure to work late hours or from hotel room. If you can be that needed link between the business and the technical types, I.e. understand the technical but able to communicate it to business, they will pay you.
Hi ey3 can we message? Would be interested to know more and figure out how to transition into sales in a similar way.
Leaving for job that is ~220 all in and hours appear to be 8:30-6:00
Where?! (Congrats!!!)
friend of mine is a SWE at google and makes well more than that with similar hours (9-5 or whatever it takes, which can be more or less than 40/week)
Depends on the level as to the expectations. Some high paying jobs are chill while others are pressure cookers. Company culture, industry, your role, etc all matter.
I have 3YOE and work from 930am to 5pm. Making 200k+. I travel Tuesday to Thursday if I want to.
Is that you, my EA? Didn't realise my Xmas gift was that large
seems like a lot of people in consulting work harder not smarter. i usually do 40-45 hours a week and I don't have any issues with performance. most people who end up doing 50+ hours have an issue with time management.
Disagree. Consulting can be a gamble where if you are on a bad project with poor leadership, no amount of efficiency and upward communication will change things.
Instead of pointing fingers, be grateful if hasn't happened to you YET.
Either that, or they are in constant danger of being axed.
Lol have you only been in consulting?
Never assume something about someone else when you have no information. This goes for this topic and any others that you feel compelled to weigh in on when you know nothing about it or it doesn’t impact you at all
No assumptions here! May be the question should have been can I work 40 hrs and still make 200k+? Does that sound fair? From what I’ve seen doesn’t seem to be the case. If they are paying you that much every employer wants to get every penny’s worth 😂 which might invariably translate to more hours.
^i also want to work 45hrs- sending "pls fix thx" emails!!
Has consulting taught you nothing? Never assume anything OP
Plenty of people in my roll pull 200+ working 40 hour weeks
Today was my second week at G. I went to work at 8:45 - there wasn’t a single sole within my sight on my floor. And then, it started emptying out around 5:30pm. I don’t know if I will ever get used to this.
My friends that make SIGNIFICANTLY more than I do work waaaay less hours... I’m talking - a typical flat 40 or sometimes less. They have careers in pharmaceutical sales, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, healthcare project management, etc. I’ve heard several times that my “hourly wage” is technically bullshit.
C2... correct. I’m definitely keeping my eye open for opportunities with higher compensation AND an actual work/life balance
Very similar to EY3 - left a year ago, >200k, never work earlier than 9 or later than 5. If you are technically specialized, have strong industry knowledge, and good in front of clients, your floor is much higher.
You can get this from ipums. They have salary and usual hours worked in the census data.
