The fact that he/she had to ask is the very sad and real reality that brown people have to deal with living in this country. But yes, it’s safe lol. North Dakotans are very conservative/Red and you’ll see lots of Trump signs around. But they’re mostly good and nice people who will be happy to have a beer with you and talk to you, or even help you out if you need.

I'm with D2. I'm Black and have driven pretty much everywhere east of the Mississippi, and find it to be a generally ignorant question. Lynchings 100% do still happen in this country, but not to random people passing through North Dakota. Far fewer people care about your race (in normal daily activities) than you'd think. If anything, the danger would be as a woman on the road with a car breakdown or something if there are no safe hotels around.

like

Is this North Dakota, USA? Or are you referring to North Dakota, Afghanistan?

Bad joke

like

That's not a thing. Sure, it's not impossible, but you can get lynched in an urban environment just as easily as you can in a rural setting. Just mind your business and the odds are very high that you'll be fine.

I know it's a concern for you OP (I'm also a minority), but no one will actively harass you. You may get some curious stares or ignorant questions but people are nice for the most part and just want to go about their daily lives.

There are lots of touristy spots to drive through in S Dakota - I think more than North, so I would recommend taking that route (unless you’ve been already). Don’t want to make generalizations about safety but you should be safe visiting national parks and state monuments and staying nearby.

I’m brown and have driven across the US multiple times. You have nothing to worry about other than fear in your head.

Thanks all!! Just what I wanted to hear for reassurance! I am a woman too and although I grew up in the US, I haven’t done a cross country road trip with my luggage stowed in the car. I just wanted to be sure I am not crazy to be trying this when we aren’t out of the woods with pandemic and with the political divide

like

Thanks D3 will take it into hotel durinh night stay

Being brown is fine. Being a woman is of greater concern if traveling alone but, of course, certainly manageable. As always, make sure friends know your itinerary and expect you to check in.

Very valid question. Sorry for all the folks who don’t get it. I’m a brown woman and get nervous going to states that don’t have a ton of brown folks (people are racist, assume I’m not American, talk to me slow, etc.). I don’t understand all these comments that are in shock of what you had to say (I wonder if these people are brown / white passing)

likesmart

It's because the question was about safety, not comfort. I'm just a normal black dude, I get stared at, ignored, insulted...the racism is part of the rural ambiance. At no point has my physical safety ever been at risk on a road trip. That's not to say it doesn't happen (and I reiterate than women are absolutely in more danger than men because men suck), but it is statistically very safe to make that drive. There's more danger on the actual road.

You should be more worried about car breakins if you are visiting San Francisco in Cali than worrying about the Dakotas tbh.

Not if you ride a motorcycle. Stay away from Sturgis 🤣

Why would ypu ever want to go there...

Some people are open minded and want to explore and learn.

I just got back from the dakotas for vacation. Where are you going? I’m Asian and there are definitely touristy spots. I personally didn’t experience anything even when I thought I might. Having said that I don’t have your lived experience.

I would also try to hit South Dakota and visit badlands, wind cave, devils tower, mount rushmore

I drove to Florida twice during the pandemic—from the Northeast. I’m female. Never a problem. I drove during the day. Stayed on 95. Drove for 7-8 hours a day. Stayed in great hotels. Would do it again in a heartbeat and would also do it driving across the country.

I’m sorry you feel this way. One thing I’ve learned as an immigrant is that America is very unlike what the media portray it to be. Yes, bad things happen, and yes, there are racist people (in every country). But on the whole, America is one of the friendliest, diverse, safest countries in the world. The media will have you believe otherwise, but they have an agenda.
