Is it so terrible to ask for another month between jobs? I asked for 1.5 months but my bg check didn’t clear until now and now I’m exactly 2.5 weeks away from my start date. I asked for another month but I’m not getting positive responses :(

It’d be pretty irritating if I were trying to fill the role, and thought I had a candidate locked in with a start date. Why do you need another month? If there’s a legit reason it’s probably doable even if annoying. Only you can decide if it’s worth it to you. Every decision leaves an impression.

Honestly, I’d be on the next call with my recruiter to evaluate delaying the start vs. going with my runner up.

Thank you all for your insights! I ended up giving them my reasons and asked for at least an additional week but said I was flexible to starting earlier!

M2, I wish but just had a deadline this week 😭 I can’t even enjoy the thought of a new job because I’m so buried.

I’m going to wait for their response before I give my notice just in case though….. after this thread, I’m paranoid.

It’s not terrible to ask. Worse case is you are told no, but there is no problem being transparent. If you accepted and only later asked, it is irritating because you may have been included in a project and now that could impact the ability for the project team to get started. Having said that, demand for talent is so high, you won’t lose your job if you insist. Just follow up again and indicate you planned a personal matter that would begin once you quit your prior job, which was the intent of the 6 weeks and you needed to pass background before you quit. Good chance they grant it. Just make sure when you do come that you get off the ground fast. No one will remember.

Never put in notice until the BG check and drug screen clears. Talk to the recruiter if you just put in notice. Say you want to take a break, initially planned X time, but because of the bg check vendor delay I want to meet you half way and only take Y time off. If they agree, communicate it to whoever you’re going into thanking them for the flexibility and looking forward to starting strong.

Your incoming firm wants you. If they pass now, they’ve wasted all this time and would have to redo the process. Sunk cost fallacy is real. For reference, I took 3 months to show up to make sure a couple of big projects could be handed off gracefully.

I delayed my start at Deloitte by two weeks and had a nearly similar reason…needed to finish up work and take a break. The extension was fine but the work for my previous client never stopped.

I initially planned for a four week break before starting the project. I felt loyalty to my then client and ended up with NO break. Clocked out late on Friday and rolled on to the new job that Monday. The on boarding requirements were intense, I was immediately staffed and put to test. I wish I would have stood my ground with my then client and left.

The only silver lining is my onboarding was around the holiday time so I eventually got a break but it would have been tough otherwise. Take a break even if for only one additional week. Your future self will thank you.

They will be shitty about it but everyone is so desperate to hire that they will still give you the job no matter the start date. At least come up with some kind of pretense that you need the time between jobs because this is America and your mental health isn’t in our corporate strategy.

This. If you REALLY need the time come up with a reasonable human related excuse, I would even wait until the last minute/week before new start to seem more organic and less pre-meditated. And also to make it less likely they go with runner up if there was competition

I AM excited!! I had amazing interviews and absolutely loved my interviewers and the group itself. I am just very very very tired and need a rest… and need to close out my tasks.

The anxious part of me is also like, what if I give my notice tomorrow and then they rescind my offer… then I’ll be REALLY out of luck lol.

Someone did that to me a few years ago and then backed out the week before they were supposed to start. Wasted two months stringing us along on a decision and then the break.

So I’d take a fairly dim view on it. But probably worth a discussion to see what could be done.
