Is it the norm for creatives to move cities every few years for work? What do creatives with families do — live in a major city (NYC, LA, San Fran etc.) to be able to establish a home and have an ad career?

Yes and no. It’s more going where the best opportunities are at the time. Each city goes through a dry spell and you just have to decide if you’re established enough there to want to wait it out or if you’re fine chasing a better opportunity in another city. Ex: I was in SF for a while and needed some big campaign work vs digital one offs for my book. I wasn’t getting any hits in SF that had what I was looking for so I expanded my search to NY. Worked in NY for a few years until I couldn’t handle the cold and moved to LA bc a job here satisfied my next need.

TLDR you have to compromise/make sacrifices somewhere. A lot of my friends with families have gone in-house or stayed put bc their priority is their family and (actually getting to see them). Mine is my career and getting my portfolio where I want it to be and moving is not an issue for me bc I plan on dying alone. The longer you’re in the industry the more you’ll find new ways of working around things to get where you want to go.

My first gig out was longer permalance so it was freelance rates but for almost 9 months. If you save as much as you can the first couple months you’ll have more than enough for a safety net. I would dig around the freelance bowl and search cities and rates. You really do make about double what a full time salary pays.

Make less money than the ones who move every few years for work.

I’ve been living out of a suitcase for the last 3 years as a freelancer around various parts of LA/OC area. Moved back home when Covid hit. Idk how people do it. I’m tired and want a stable-ish life. It’s hard meeting or dating anyone cuz I’m always changing agencies and living arrangements. The money is finally getting better and maybe Covid will change some things, but man, I just want to live lol. Can a woman live in this economy or industry anymore? Le sigh.

Would love to hear people’s thoughts on remote - given the current pandemic environment. Do you think it will become a permanent thing in the wake of covid, or go back to how it was?

Following this.

I did while I was single. It can be exhausting but my circumstances were also unique. Didn't want to get trapped in auto and then got laid off at the job I moved for. Moved again to freelance in NY for a year then moved again for a new job that had layoffs before I hit a year there.

I feel you, also moved to get out of auto and was laid off at the new job in a city with a small ad community. Don’t miss the big city rent but I definitely don’t like feeling at the mercy of one or a few agencies.
